The Pursuit of God

August 27, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

When we think about the pursuit of God, most of us consider what we can do to chase after Him. Certainly we want to be always looking for ways to know, understand, and love Him more; it is the other side of the equation many never stop to ponder. God is constantly pursuing us. As much as we love Him, He loves us more.

As much as we desire a relationship with Him, He desires a relationship with us even more. It’s inconceivable; how could the Creator of the Universe take notice of us? Our ability to fathom the enormity of what His pursuit of us means does not change the fact the very God you worship pursues and seeks to serve you.

Leave the Familiar

August 24, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Francis Chan once said, “Let’s be eager to leave what is familiar for what is true.” We tend to cling to what is familiar in spite of what is true. We would rather have what makes us feel comfortable or safe than pursue the truth, which is often uncomfortable and even dangerous. The fact is we spend most of our lives running towards the familiarity of our culture and away from the truth of God.

While we might say we don’t live this way, the truth shows up on our calendars and in our checkbooks. We spend inordinate amounts of time and money on what is familiar, but very little of either on what is true.

Busy

August 20, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Commenting on Leonard Ravenhill’s statement that “The accent in the Church today is not on devotion, but on commotion”, A.W. Tozer said “What a man is must be shown to be more important than what he does… Externalism has taken over. God now speaks by the wind and the earthquake only; the still small voice can be heard no more. The whole religious machine has become a noisemaker.”

As you survey the well-known churches of our day, this seems very true. As a general rule, there is a lot of activity surrounding them, but the world is not changing as a result. It’s not just the big churches either. For too many local congregations, the emphasis is on what they are doing with little concern being shown for the ultimate results of that busyness.

Lord Come Quickly

August 13, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

A common prayer of believers over the years has been, “Lord, come quickly!” We long for Jesus to return and put an end to the misery and evil surrounding us. While we know life will be infinitely better and simpler when Jesus returns, we must also recognize we have a mission to accomplish until that day arrives.

If we are going to pray, “Lord, come quickly”, then we must be willing to go quickly ourselves. Jesus has sent us into the world as His ambassadors. He won’t come back until we have gone out and spread the good news of His love and the truth about His character.

How to Be Effective for God

July 30, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

The task of doing what Jesus called us to do can be daunting. We don’t feel qualified, prepared, or in any way adequate. All this proves is we are thinking too much of our own abilities and too little of God’s power. Francois Fenelon once wrote, “In doing what God wills there is very little to be done by us. And yet, there is a wonderful work to be accomplished;

it is nothing less than that of keeping nothing back, making no resistance, even for a moment, to the jealous Love that searches inexorably into the most secret recesses of the soul for the smallest trace of self, for the slightest intimations of an affection of which Divine Love is not the Author.” In other words, our main task is simply to surrender everything to Jesus and He’ll take care of the rest.
