Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Give Me Just Enough

April 16, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

greed,materialism,servitude

One of my favorite Bible passages is Proverbs 30:8-9:

Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.
Give me neither poverty nor wealth;
feed me with the food I need.
Otherwise, I might have too much
and deny You, saying, “Who is the LORD?”
or I might have nothing and steal,
profaning the name of my God.

In our materialistic Western society, we are encouraged to constantly acquire and consume. If we could sum up our modern culture in one word, I think that word would be “more”. [Read more…] about Give Me Just Enough

Finding Peace within the Storm

April 9, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

Calm, grace under pressure, peace through Jesus

In Mark 4:35-40 we read of Jesus calming a storm. If you grew up attending Sunday school you are probably familiar with the story. The disciples and Jesus got into a boat to cross a lake. They had been ministering all day and were looking to get away from the crowds for a little rest. In the middle of the night a fierce storm sprung up, with the wind and waves buffeting their boat. The disciples panicked and felt certain they would capsize and drown. Meanwhile Jesus was sleeping through the whole thing. In desperation the disciples woke Him and asked if He even cared they were going to die. At the climax of this story, Jesus simply got up and told the wind to stop and the waves to be still. Immediately all was calm. Crisis averted; Jesus saves the day. It was a common theme in the lives of the disciples.

What is the Cost of Love?

March 15, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

Crown of thorns, love costs everything, sacrifice

Jesus demonstrated in the most visible way that true love costs everything. Before His death, He prayed that if it were possible to accomplish the mission in any other way that it would be provided for Him (Matthew 26:38-39). In the end, there was only the way of the cross, with its painful betrayals, beatings and humiliations along the way. Love prevented Him from turning away from that brutal path of sacrifice. At any point along the way, Jesus could have said, “It’s not worth it” and been delivered from what He was going through (Matthew 26:52-54). Instead, Jesus perfectly demonstrated the cost of love. When we surrender our lives to Him, we declare our love for Him and pledge that His life will be our model in everything we do. With that in mind, how much is your love for Christ costing you?

God is not Small

February 9, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

God is powerful,God is not weak

At what point in our relationship with God did we begin to shrink Him down into a more manageable size? Remember when you first came to know Christ and recognized what a beautiful, awesome and powerful Creator He was? Remember when you prayed bold prayers and fully expected to see them come to fruition? There was a time when you cast all your worries and concerns on Him and left them there because you knew God was far greater than any of your problems. But somewhere along the way we stopped believing all of that. Oh, we still say that we believe He is all powerful and capable of anything because that’s what Christians are supposed to say. Deep down though, I wonder if you still believe it to be true.

Who Needs Enemies?

February 2, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

Christians attacking one another

I recently heard a talk by Christine Cain where she made the statement, “Why do we need the devil when we’ve got Christians?” It is very sad how true this remark actually is. While we are encouraged in the Bible to be a unified body of believers (John 17:11, Ephesians 4:1-3), the reality is that we have become anything but that; the modern church is a fragmented body of denominations marked by warring factions of worship styles, missional focuses, and political agendas. We no longer rally around the commands of Jesus, but rather flock to like-minded individuals or comfortable surroundings.
