Absolute Surrender

April 15, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Surrender is a word which causes mixed emotions for me. My independent and ferocious side wants to scream out, “Never! I won’t quit, won’t stop, won’t ever give in.” Surrender implies I’ve failed in some way. I didn’t complete the task or achieve the mission. I’m not one who likes to be beaten. On the flip side, surrender is the most beautiful word I know and is the aspiration of my life.

I know I cannot win until I surrender. The mission will fail unless and until I surrender. While my prideful self resists surrender, my love for Christ demands it of me. So, in a paradoxical sense, I must refuse to surrender to ever stop surrendering to Jesus!

Our Mission

March 28, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Larry Osborne, author of, “Thriving in Babylon”, wrote, “Our great assignment is to go out into all the world and recruit Jesus followers, teaching them to obey everything he taught us. Jesus never told us to create a Christian nation, impose our standards on nonbelievers, or preserve a particular culture. He told us to win over the lost.”

That is the mission of every follower of Christ. We are to live our lives in a way that draws others to Him. We are to tell others about His love, His beauty, and His character. Everything we do and every word we say should be to point others to Jesus.

Finish the Race

March 21, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I think we all want to live a victorious life. No one sets out to be a loser. We all want to be winners. Since we’re going to be running the race of life every day, we may as well win. Otherwise, it seems like a tremendously futile endeavor. The apostle Paul said we all run the race to win, to earn the crown of victory (1 Corinthians 9:24).

As long as we are running for Christ, there is nothing wrong with striving to win. We want our lives to be pleasing to Him. We want to live in such a way that will bring Him honor and glory, and in the process to further His mission and bring His Kingdom to earth as it is in Heaven.

Building God’s Kingdom

March 14, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

In Haggai 1:4, God says, “Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins?” While we should certainly feel some conviction of this taken at face value, I think there is also a deeper application. Looking at the state of the typical Christian life today, we could paraphrase this into “Why are you building such a luxurious kingdom for yourself while neglecting My Kingdom?”

There is no escape from the fact almost every one of us devotes far more time building our own “house” than we do building the Kingdom of God. This attitude permeates how we spend our time and our money. The culture in which we live demands we prioritize self before others and certainly before God.

A Purposeful Life

February 25, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

God designed this world to be a place of peace and harmony. Satan has hijacked that plan, and after generations of compounding sin, the world today is quite often a frustrating, discouraging, and painful place to live. It’s easy to get caught up in the swirl of war, disease, distrust, and evil around us. While we want to live for Christ, sometimes the path gets dark and we lose our way.

Our dreams of making a difference fade and far from living a purposeful life, we find ourselves drifting, pulled along by an invisible flow pervading our existence. And tomorrow it all begins again. How do we break out of the cycle and begin to live our lives on purpose and in step with God’s design?
