Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Your Personal Philosophy

February 18, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

My mentor, Jim Rohn, often spoke about having a personal philosophy. What he meant was to be intentional and have a plan for how you would live in each area of your life. For example, among others, we should have a financial philosophy, a relationship philosophy, and first and foremost a spiritual philosophy. When it comes to being a disciple of Jesus, the spiritual philosophy is what must drive all others.

If we mess this one up, we will not recover. But if we get it right, we can overcome any other failure or tragedy in life. What’s your personal philosophy when it comes to following Jesus? Have you ever thought about it?

Spend Our Time

February 11, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I recently came across a concept which resonated deeply with me. The thought, in a nutshell, is to realize we never spend money, only time. What a revolutionary way to think! Most of us work jobs where we spend our time in exchange for money. Every dollar we recirculate is the result of the time we spent beforehand. Charles Spezzano was the originator of this philosophy. He said: “People don’t pay for things with money; they pay for them with time.

If you say to yourself, ‘In five years, I’ll have put away enough to buy that vacation house’, then what you are really saying is that the house will cost you five years – one-twelfth of your adult life.” Wow. What if we weighed all our purchases in what they cost us in time? In fact, let’s make it even more personal in how it relates to how we spend our lives for God.

Enough Light

February 4, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

In this life, we can’t often see very far ahead. The future is a mystery, shrouded in clouds. It both beckons and mocks. We make our plans, but there is little over which we have any control. While it’s wise to plan, it is also prudent to remember few plans reach perfect fruition. The point of the planning is to become someone who can head in the proper direction and make necessary adjustments along the way.

In our finite and physical bodies, we simply can’t see very far up the road ahead.  Still, planning is at the forefront of most of our minds and has spawned a lucrative industry to help guide us. But we don’t need to see so far ahead. We only need enough light for the next step.

The Meaning of Life

January 31, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Instead of thinking about what you might accomplish in your day, year, or life, focus instead on how others might be impacted by your words and actions. This life isn’t about us. It’s about God and others, although you would never know it by much of our modern culture. Forget about trying to learn this truth from Hollywood or Madison Avenue.

This life – your life – exists solely to glorify God and to serve others (Matthew 22:37-39). So, instead of calculating what you might do with your life, perhaps instead determine how your life can have the greatest impact for God and for others. This, after all, is the meaning of life.

Never Expect Smooth Sailing

January 21, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus never let His circumstances dictate His behavior. No matter what was happening around Him, He stayed focused… and there was a lot going on around Him! As followers of Jesus, we should never expect smooth sailing. If following Jesus was easy, I’m guessing a lot more people would choose to do so. Peter, one of Jesus’s closest friends, said we shouldn’t be surprised when fiery ordeals come upon us; we shouldn’t consider it to be unusual or unique to us (1 Peter 4:12).

In other words, struggles and temptations are always going to be present in our lives. They are a given. What is up to us is how we will respond. We can stay focused as Christ did, or we can allow ourselves to become distracted and choose the easier path.
