God’s Word

July 26, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

God’s Word is all about God. That should be obvious. But we spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out our place in His story. The Bible is not about you or me. It’s about God. We make a mistake when we try to make it about us. From Genesis to Revelation, we are reading the story of Jesus. Since Jesus is the very Word of God (John 1:1), it only follows that God’s Word is all about Him.

Yet the most prevalent form of preaching today centers on finding yourself or your circumstances in the Bible. I’m not saying there isn’t a plethora of wisdom to be found in the Word of God, but it is not the primary reason the Bible exists.

True Repentance

July 22, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

True repentance will drive you to your knees and onto your face. It’s not just being sorry about what you’ve done, it’s about being mortified that you have grieved the Holy Spirit of God. Too much is being preached from pulpits today about repentance being about saying you’re sorry.

I’d like to think many pastors mean well when they give their explanations of repentance, likening it to a turning away from something to walk in the opposite direction. And there is truth in what they say. The reality is, though, true repentance is realizing that you have grieved the heart of the holy God. And that thought should absolutely wreck you.

All the Way

July 19, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

Early in the book of Judges, we see Israel falling into a pattern of sin that continues to plague each of us today. In Judges 1:28, we read that, in opposition to God’s command (Deuteronomy 7:1-2; Deuteronomy 20:15–16), Israel neglected to drive out the peoples of the promised land completely. They stopped short of what God commanded them to do. The Lord told Israel to eradicate the idolatrous people from the land. If they didn’t, the people might tempt them to follow other gods.

Israel drove out most of the people, but they stopped short of going all the way. They became complacent and figured what they had done was good enough. But stopping short of complete obedience to God is never good enough. It shows a lack of faith, a lack of commitment, laziness, or perhaps all the above. What it does not reflect is a sold-out devotion to Jesus.

Stop Apologizing for Speaking the Truth

July 15, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

A popular Christian singer has come under fire for a satirical song he wrote. While the song was amusing, like all good satire, it featured elements of truth. Most notably, the truth it contained was straight from God’s Word. It was basically a song from a father encouraging his daughters to dress modestly. It was sweet and funny, and amazingly controversial.

When several people began calling his song offensive, the singer took it down and apologized. Besides leaving me scratching my head, I couldn’t help but wonder when Christians will stop apologizing for speaking the truth.

What Is the Point?

July 12, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

While reading Christopher J. H. Wright’s fascinating book, “Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament”, I became transfixed by something he wrote: “A destination is not just the end of a journey; it is also the point of a journey.” I can’t wait to meet Jesus face to face. It’s when all the frustrations, heartaches, and pain will find their purpose. Living for Jesus is a grand adventure. It is the highest privilege and greatest honor of life. It is a most remarkable journey.

Following Jesus isn’t easy. It can cost you your life, and it will cost you something along the way. But this is what makes it so exciting. We don’t know what is around the next corner. But we know Jesus will go with us. Jesus calls us to walk the narrow path to find Him (Matthew 7:13-14). This isn’t the easy, well-traveled way of the world. That road is predictable. No, we travel a path of great danger and uncertainty. The only thing we know for sure is where the path leads, and that is to Jesus Himself.
