Running the Race

March 6, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Paul’s letter to the Church at Corinth contains the familiar passage where he compares living life for Christ with running a race (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). It’s a great analogy not only because the road we travel is long but also because of the discipline it requires to stay on the path. Any form of athletics is by its nature a competitive process.

Everyone who competes wants to finish first, but only one can. In some events, like a marathon, participants are content to only finish, regardless of winning or losing. Both hold lessons for us. No one runs a race without a goal, and no one achieves their goal without putting in a lot of hard work before the race ever begins.

Stop Apologizing for Speaking the Truth

July 15, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

A popular Christian singer has come under fire for a satirical song he wrote. While the song was amusing, like all good satire, it featured elements of truth. Most notably, the truth it contained was straight from God’s Word. It was basically a song from a father encouraging his daughters to dress modestly. It was sweet and funny, and amazingly controversial.

When several people began calling his song offensive, the singer took it down and apologized. Besides leaving me scratching my head, I couldn’t help but wonder when Christians will stop apologizing for speaking the truth.

Don’t Give Up

July 1, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

God has chosen You. He is pursuing You. There is work for which You have been uniquely designed to do. This work will be done if we will only hold fast, keep our eyes on Jesus, and don’t give up. Satan roams around like a roaring lion seeking to destroy you and your dreams (1 Peter 5:8). The devil will do whatever it takes to take you down. Through trials, temptations, anxiety, fear, and discouragement, he will pull out every stop to dissuade you from pursuing Christ and all He has given you to do.

Don’t give up. Don’t give in to the lies of the adversary. Only you can do the work God has created you to do. While your talents and gifts may seem insignificant to you, they are a vital part of God’s plan for building His Kingdom here on earth. So, stay strong and don’t give up.

The Bottomless Sea

July 9, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

C.S. Lewis once said, “Remember that the ‘bottomless sea’ can’t hurt us as long as we keep on swimming.” That’s important to remember when we are going through dark times in our life. Jesus never promised a life spent pursuing Him would be easy. In fact, He told us it would be anything but easy (John 15:18-20, John 16:33, 1 Peter 5:10, James 1:2-3).

Still, it is easy to question where God is in the midst of our struggle. We feel as if we’re drowning and see no way to get back to the surface. I can think of no better advice than what Lewis gave: just keep swimming! God is always closer than you think. He’s right beside you, reaching out His hand (Matthew 14:27-31).

Deliverance

January 21, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

faith,perseverance,patience of Job,facing trials,tribulation

Have you ever had periods in your life where you felt like you could relate to Job? There are seasons in all of our journeys where, to the best of our knowledge we are following well, yet everything seems to be crumbling around us. Maybe a job loss or financial difficulty will arrive. Perhaps we will lose someone close to us or have an internal battle threaten to rage out of control. We are doing the things God told us to do but still our lives seem to be spiraling downward and picking up speed. These are the times of character refinement, and it is these moments that determine our true loyalty. Will we give up because it is too hard? Or will we say with Job, “The Lord gives and He takes away… I will never curse my friend” (Job 1:21-22; Job 2:9-10)?
