Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Your Mission in Life

November 9, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Sometimes I’m afraid I’ll begin to sound like a broken record. As a writer I always want to be bringing my readers something fresh and new, so I try and vary my content regularly to keep my audience interested. Those are my instincts honed by years of studying my craft. The problem is God messes up the whole equation. When God leads me to write about a topic, there’s no arguing about it.

The whole purpose of this blog is to teach others what God is teaching me. So when God says, “Write this”, I write it regardless of whether or not I’ve already written about it. With that in mind, I want to once again visit the topic of the spiritual battle swirling around us while we selfishly pursue all this world has to offer.

Fight

November 5, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

“When whole regiments of professed believers are too timid to fight and too smug to be ashamed, surely it must bring an astringent smile to the face of the enemy; and it should bring a blush to the cheeks of the whole Church of Christ.” This is certainly no less true today than it was when A.W. Tozer wrote those words over fifty years ago.

Many of us look back and lament the days when the Church took the fight to the enemy, but Tozer’s observation of his own times shows those days are further behind us than we dare think or imagine. As a whole, the Church has lost the will to fight and refuses to be ashamed at the weakness of its plight.

Comfortable Christians

October 5, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I quote A.W. Tozer a lot here, and never cease to be amazed how relevant his teachings are more than half a century after his death. Here is a selection from a recent reading of his writings: “There is no limit to what God could do in our world if we would dare to surrender before Him with a commitment like this:  ‘Oh God, I hereby give myself to You. I give my family. I give my business. I give all I possess.

Take all of it, Lord-and take me! I give myself in such measure that if it is necessary that I lose everything for your sake, let me lose it. I will not ask what the price is. I will ask only that I may be all that I ought to be as a follower and disciple of Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.’

The Privilege of Serving Christ

October 1, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

“If we belong to Jesus Christ, we should never compromise our spiritual decisions on the basis of ‘What is this going to cost me?’ We ought only to ask, ‘What is my spiritual duty and my spiritual privilege before God?’” This quote from A.W. Tozer cuts to the core of our resistance to follow Christ no matter the cost. Jesus didn’t ask if the price was worth it when He went to the cross.

He simply did what was required to live a life that looked like that of His Father. He didn’t turn away from the most excruciating pain and humiliation a man could ever know. He knew what His duty was before God, and it was His privilege to serve God in a way that at once pleased His Father and saved all of those selfish, wretched souls He loved so much.

Obedience to God

September 28, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

We resist obedience to God. In truth, we resist anything that infringes on our self-will. So we must answer the question of which is more important: our will or God’s will? It doesn’t matter how many hours you spend reading the Bible or on your knees in prayer. A.W. Tozer said, “Intensity of prayer is no criterion of its effectiveness.

A man may throw himself on his face and sob out his troubles to the Lord and yet have no intention to obey the commandments of Christ. Strong emotion and tears may be no more than the outcropping of a vexed spirit, evidence of stubborn resistance to God’s known will”. We are a people prone to going through the motions without ever experiencing the profound power of God found in a life of obedience to Him.
