Number Your Days

February 11, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

time is short, time is fleeting, time management, make time for God

Psalm 90:12 instructs us to number our days. When we understand that our time on this planet is limited, we can begin to live with a greater sense of urgency and purpose. All of us realize that we will die someday, but few of us live like we believe it. We spend our days engaged in trivial pursuits and sleepwalking through our nights as if there will always be another. Many have resigned themselves to the mediocrity of conformity and accept the notion that as long as they are comfortable and able to “get by”, then life is good and they are doing enough. This isn’t the “abundant” life promised by Jesus, so why are we so willing to settle for it?

Break My Heart

February 4, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

World Vision,The Hole in Our Gospel,Bob Pierce, break my heart with what breaks yours, hosanna,Hillsong United

In the past few years there has been a lot of attention given to the quote by World Vision’s founder, Bob Pierce, who said, “Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God.” The popular worship band, Hillsong United, included that now famous line in their song, “Hosanna”. Christian bloggers around the world, including myself, have written posts around this phrase. It is at once both beautiful and powerful. In the last year or so, I am hearing and reading this quote repeated more and more. Yet as I look around the world, I am seeing changes for the worse and not better. Is this just the latest catch phrase (think, “WWJD – What Would Jesus Do”) or do we honestly yearn for God to break our hearts?

What’s On Your Mind?

January 31, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

think on these things, you are what you think about, ppurity, think positive, thought life

There’s a wise adage that says, “What has your attention has you”. So the question is really obvious; what has your attention today? If our focus is anywhere other than on Jesus Christ, we are captured by something other than Him. Satan is a master of distraction. Since the dawn of time he has been parading a feast of temptation before our eyes (Genesis 3:1-6). He doesn’t care if you ever go his way; he’s content to just keep your eyes off of Jesus. We make it too easy for him.

Mediocrity

January 28, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

mediocre,settling for average,being average,less than your best,giving up,potential

I’ve been struck lately with a preoccupation regarding the concept of mediocrity. It continues to come into my mind as I see evidence of it all around me and within my own life. Jesus gave His opinion of mediocrity when He said that He detested lukewarm faith. Using strong language, He said that mediocre Christians made Him vomit (Revelation 3:16). We’ve bought into a teaching that says as long as we say a certain prayer that Christ will welcome us into His Kingdom with open arms. But Jesus makes it plain that unless we have a “hot” faith, He will spit us out. This is not a picture of the open arms we have been taught to expect.

Lord of the New Year

January 3, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus is Lord,Lord of your life,Jesus first,God first,intentional living,purpose driven life,rick warren,new years resolution,life plan,discipleship

I touched on this a bit before (see “Take Action”), but with the New Year now underway, I think it’s important to emphasize the value of intentional living over the next twelve months. How will you be different and more like Jesus when December rolls around? What will you have done to glorify Him as you look back over this year? One thing is certain, if you don’t plan how you will get somewhere you’ve never been, you will never arrive. Spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident. You don’t wake up one day and discover you are a disciple of Jesus. Believing in Christ is easy. Becoming the person He created you to be is difficult and requires an incredible amount of work on your part.
