Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Be Encouraged

August 5, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

This world will try to break you. Satan is using everything in his power to cripple you and bring you to your knees. But be encouraged! Jesus has overcome the enemy, and the Spirit of the living God resides in you. There is nothing this world or any of the evil in it can do to stop the mission of Jesus from being fulfilled, and you have a vital role to play.

The last command given to us by our Lord was to go and tell everyone about Him (Matthew 28:18-20). At that moment, He commissioned everyone who would believe in Him to be missionaries of His gospel. You don’t have to travel around the world to fulfill this mission. You can be a missionary in your workplace, neighborhood, and even your grocery store.

Criticism is a Cancer

August 2, 2018 by Tim Sherfy

I heard Pastor Craig Groeschel say in a recent message, “When emotions are high, wisdom is low.” How true. When we let our emotions rule the day, we are destined to say or do something we will regret. Nowhere is this more evident than in our conversations with other people. Too often we find ourselves being criticized for something or we are the ones doing the criticizing. Criticism is a cancer that should be eradicated from the life of every follower of Jesus. Our default interaction with anyone should be that of encouragement (Ephesians 4:29-32).

Humans, as a rule, love to criticize. Whether from a place of pride or as an act of defense, criticism spills from our lips easily and without warning. Scripture contains many warnings against using criticism, but we have either forgotten or perhaps choose to ignore those parts of God’s Word.

Measure Your Words

September 18, 2017 by Tim Sherfy

Proverbs 10:19 says, “When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is wise.” As someone who writes thousands of words each week, this is especially relevant and convicting to me. However, you don’t have to be a writer to need to learn this lesson. If we don’t measure our words, odds are we’re going to say things dishonoring to God, hurtful to others, and regretful to ourselves. Usually, it will be all the above.

Jesus’s brother James warned our tongues could not be tamed and could start great, destructive fires (James 3:5-9). Paul instructed us to only speak words of encouragement, never saying derogatory or inflammatory things (Ephesians 4:29-32). In a world enamored with social media, it has never been more important to measure your words.

Be Encouraged

on the shoulders of giants, mentors, heroes, role models, encouragement, encourager, stand fast

I have many spiritual “heroes”. I want to die like John Wesley, penniless because I have given everything away for the sake of the Kingdom. I desire to live with the unabashed enthusiasm for Jesus that Keith Green exhibited during his too-short life. The insight and depth of understanding of all things Christendom exhibited by C.S. Lewis and A.W. Tozer compels me to learn and pray more.  Shane Claiborne’s simple lifestyle, Francis Chan’s grasp of God’s love, David Platt’s radical call to service, and Greg Boyd’s liberating views on God’s will have inspired me to greater freedom and devotion to Jesus Christ. We all need people from whom we draw encouragement and inspiration.
