Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Faith

Unfaithful

October 10, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

You may be familiar with the Old Testament story of Hosea and Gomer. Hosea was a prophet whom God instructed to marry a prostitute. The faithful and obedient prophet did as the Lord instructed. He married Gomer and they had three children. However, Gomer left Hosea to return to her former life. Hosea had to purchase his wife back so she could live with him again. The story is a picture of God’s faithfulness and relentless love.

I’ve often felt bad for Hosea. Surely his marriage was not the one he would have chosen for himself. I’ve also admired his unyielding obedience and willingness to be used by God. Before we get too wrapped up in the character of Hosea, though, we must remember he represents God in the story. It is Hosea’s prostitute wife who represents God’s people. We are all unfaithful. We are all Gomer.

Serve God and God Alone

September 29, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

The first three commandments provide almost everything you need to know to live a life pleasing to God. Last week we did a high-level flyover of all ten commandments of God’s law (see “The Ten Commandments”). Some may wonder why I’d bother spending more time on such a well-known passage of Scripture from the Old Testament. The reason is God’s law forms the bedrock of our faith.

It is this law that shows, without the blood and resurrection power of Jesus, we are lost. So I want to dive a little deeper into the first three commandments today: do not have any gods other than God, do not make anything an idol, and do not disrespect the name of God. I think we can sum up these commandments by saying we must serve God and God alone.

Standing Firm on the Word

September 5, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

A cashier shared with me she had lost her husband last year. She told me when he was about to breathe his last breath, he asked her to put his Bible under his feet. In her grief, she didn’t immediately comprehend the meaning of the request. The man’s brother cleared it up for her. He explained his brother wanted to die standing firm on the Word of God.

I thought it was a beautiful picture and a sign of a life well lived. To never waver or compromise the truth of God’s Word is the calling of every follower of Jesus. Not only should we stand firm in times of trouble, but we must stand firm when things are easy and going our way. Never forget or take for granted the reason for our hope.

Long Way from Eden

September 1, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

As we look around our world today, it’s hard to remember that when God finished creating everything in the heavens and on earth, He called it very good (Genesis 1:31). We’re a long way from Eden and the paradise the Lord created. Often, Evil and ugliness hide the wonder and beauty of our world. This isn’t how things are supposed to be.

The Lord created a beautiful world full of beautiful landscapes and amazing creatures. God created everything to reflect His glory and to cause us to glorify Him. Now the world is dying, groaning for a return to its original beauty, desperate to return to the state of being “very good” (Romans 8:22).

The Triune God

August 18, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

One of the great mysteries of our God is that He is a triune God. We serve one God, but He exists in three persons. He is not three different gods, but the one true God, existing in three persons who are all equal. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are of the same essence. There is not space enough here to do an in-depth explanation of the Trinity. My purpose here is to warn against a wrong understanding of the Trinity because it is of vital importance to understanding the gospel.

If you believe the Bible to be the inerrant, infallible Word of God as I do, then we must recognize there are mysteries in it we cannot understand in our humanness. Some day God will make it clear. For now, the Trinity must be something we accept by faith, even though we do not comprehend its possibility.
