Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

What Can You Do?

August 19, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

What can you do about the increasing evil that is penetrating every corner of our world? To be realistic and blunt, not much. The fall of this world was a foregone certainty before the Lord spoke the first word to create it all (Isaiah 46:9-10). None of what is transpiring is surprising to God. Every bit is part of His mysterious but sovereign plan (Ephesians 1:11-12). I don’t get it.

This isn’t in any way how I would write this grand story. Then again, I am so obviously not God. My “perfect plan” would fall apart within seconds. No, that’s too long; it would immediately fail because I am not omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, or omnibenevolent. It’s not all bad news though. While we can’t stem the tide of evil flooding our world, there is something we can do.

The Very Words of God

March 4, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

We read God’s Word to learn about Him and to hear from Him. How, then, can we approach the Bible as a dry and dusty book? How can scripture not be our most valuable possession? You will find everything you need to know about how to live a life pleasing to God in the pages of the Bible. God’s word reveals everything you need to know about life, death, and the life to come.

It is sufficient for our salvation, and it is complete in its revelation. While the Holy Spirit may give us fresh insight to help us understand and apply some of the Bible’s teachings, there is no new revelation. The very Words of God to man were gifted to us 2,000 years ago and have been guiding those who will come to Him ever since.

Books and Learning

November 27, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

I have always been surrounded by books. I am grateful to my mother for instilling a love of reading within me from a young age. She read to me regularly, and I watched my older brother devour thick books at a speed I have never come close to attaining. As a result, I was reading before entering kindergarten. Once there, I made quick work of plowing through the required reading for the year and had completed the first-grade readers as well before ever stepping foot inside an elementary school.

My love of books and passion for reading has never waned. More than half a century later, books line my walls and inhabit stacks throughout my house. And that’s before even getting to the hundreds more residing in my Kindle and Kobo e-readers. Yet, after all this, I have to agree with Solomon. There is no end to books and learning (Ecclesiastes 12:12). Unless we put into practice what we learn, it is all vanity, a chasing after the wind (Ecclesiastes 1:14).

Are You Ready?

November 2, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

In a world seemingly caught in a death spiral, every day that you fail to prepare for what’s coming puts you that much closer to being too late to prepare. It amazes me how many nations are at war, with many more on the verge of war, while so many continue to live their lives as if nothing is happening. Jesus tells us in the days before the flood, people were carrying on as if they were exempt from the judgment God was bringing on them. (Luke 17:26-27).

The same was true for Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:28-30). Are you ready to die? Is your eternity secure in Jesus Christ or have you been putting off surrendering to His Lordship? I have met too many people who assume they will have time to live for God later, unwilling to sacrifice the pleasure of living in the now. Unless you choose to ignore what’s happening in the world, you must realize that the time to seek Jesus is running out.

Read Slowly

August 14, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

The more I study the Bible, the more I recognize when it comes to God’s Word, we should read slowly. Scripture is replete with admonitions to meditate on the words of God. Meditating and delighting on God’s instruction is a regular theme throughout the book of Psalms (Psalm 1:1-2, Psalm 19:7-14, Psalm 77:12, Psalm 119:15, Psalm 119:23, Psalm 119:27, Psalm 119:48, Psalm 119:78, Psalm 119:97, Psalm 119:99, Psalm 119:148, Psalm 143:5)

and many other places throughout scripture (Joshua 1:8, Jeremiah 15:16, Nehemiah 8:1-3, Matthew 7:24-25, James 1:22-25, Philippians 4:8, Colossians 3:16). The Bible is not a book meant to be read like other books. We don’t read God’s Word to get through it, but to let it marinade our souls. When we read too quickly, we often miss the details and subtle nuances. There is no part of scripture we can afford to miss or gloss over (2 Timothy 3:16).
