Sin Has Consequences

December 1, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

While it seems obvious to say, sin has consequences. Everything we do against the holiness of God will subject us to punishment. Despite what many think, or what casual observation appears to reveal, no one can thumb their nose at God and get away with it. Our God is holy and sin cannot exist in His presence. It is only His patient love and goodness that prevents Him from incinerating this world right now.

There have been periods of great evil in the history of our world, and we are certainly living through a devastatingly wicked period right now. God is patient, but He will not remain so forever. Someday, perhaps very soon, the righteous anger of our holy God will be unleashed and destruction awaits all those who refuse to bow to Him as Lord.

Idolatry

November 17, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Few of us would say we struggle with the sin of idolatry, but almost all of us do. Idolatry takes on so many forms that it is difficult to recognize. The fact is, most of us would be unaware if not for someone else pointing out the issue in our life. The hard truth is Jesus plainly said we cannot serve two masters; He said we would love one and hate the other (Matthew 6:24).

Therefore, if we are falling prey to idolatry, we are introducing a second master into our lives. This means we love it more than we love Christ. We would never say it like that, but our lives reveal the truth.

What is Sin?

November 10, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

We see the results of sin in our lives and in our world. It’s a little like the wind; easy to see the effects, but a bit tough to define. Most of us have no trouble pointing out sin in the life of someone else, but have a bit more difficulty seeing it in our own lives. For new believers, the word can be nebulous. Preachers lash out against it, but without a clear definition, perhaps many are still asking, “what is sin?”

To be sure we’re all on the same page for our discussion, let’s define what sin is. Sin is rejecting God’s order in the world, rejecting His Lordship in our lives, and rebelling against His laws (see our discussion on the “Ten Commandments”). Sin is living as if we are in charge rather than surrendering our will to God.

The Purpose of God’s Law

November 3, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

One thing you quickly discover when studying the Ten Commandments is no one can actually keep them. Nobody. What, then, is the purpose of God’s Law? When viewed from a human standpoint, it seems cruel that God would put a standard in place that no one could ever hope to attain. The game seems rigged to assure our doom.

Because our common ancestors, Adam and Eve, disobeyed the Lord, their sin has permeated all of creation until this day. We are born into that sin, infected by it, and hopeless to recover from its devastating consequences. It is this sin that keeps us from being able to keep God’s laws. We’re lost and in desperate need of a solution.

Keep the Law

October 27, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been taking a deep dive into the Ten Commandments. Having a better understanding of what the Law requires begs the question of whether any of us can measure up. To keep the Law of God is a daunting task. The sad truth is none of us can keep the Law.

Since the fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden, only Jesus has lived a life in perfect obedience to God’s laws. No man or woman has even come close, and no one ever will. Every day, we break the Law of God with our thoughts, words, and actions. No matter how much we desire to keep the Law, our flesh is too weak.
