Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Fear

Feed Your Mind

November 9, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

My pastor passed on some wisdom he had received from one of his college professors: “If you get it out of your heart, it won’t come out of your mouth.” His takeaway from that is to put into your heart what you want to come out of your mouth. Feed your mind with what you want to reflect. If you feed it words and images of divisiveness, hate, mistrust, and fear, what kind of person do you think you’ll become?

feed your mind,thoughts,emotions,feelings,love,discipleship,focus,fear,God's Kingdom,Genesis 3:1-6,serpant was more crafty,Ephesians 4:29-32,build others up,Daniel 1:3-20,Daniel refused to eat,Philippians 4:8,think on these things,whatever is lovely,John 6:35,bread of life,Kingdom of God

What sort of words do you think will come spilling from your lips? Paul implored us to speak only words that build others up (Ephesians 4:29-32). If you constantly feed your mind with messages that tear you (and others!) down, you can never do as Paul says.

A Scared World

September 24, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

When the modern world seems overwhelming, it’s always good to look back on the giants from our past for a little wisdom and perspective. A. W. Tozer once said, “A scared world needs a fearless church.” I’m sure there have been periods in the last couple thousand years where this was truer than today, but it is timely and necessary wisdom we should heed. At least in my lifetime, I’ve never seen the world be more scared.

Suicide rates are climbing rapidly. Turning on the news will only leave you frightened and depressed (I recommend you turn it off!). Fear is everywhere: fear of a global pandemic, fear of rioting, fear of job loss, fear of economic ruin, fear of government… the list goes on and on. We are living in a scared world in desperate need of hope.

Uncertain

August 27, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Everyone seems to use the term “uncertain times” these days. It’s not as if any time has ever been certain. There are always new challenges to face and tough decisions to make. When life seems uncertain, we can take great comfort in knowing our God is never uncertain and always in control. Those aren’t just nice platitudes, but definite truths based on who He is. God is the same today as He has always been and will always be (Hebrews 13:8).

uncertain,mission,love,,faith,fear,focus,uncertain times,uncertainty,hope,Hebrews 13:8,Jesus same yesterday today tomorrow,Jesus never changes,Deuteronomy 31:6,never leave or forsake

There’s a steadiness to Jesus that brings peace to our hectic and crazy world. While we encounter situations every day where we have no idea what to do, Jesus always knows the perfect response. He has a plan for every contingency of every contingency. We serve a steady God, One who is never overwhelmed.

Impact or Excuses

August 13, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

We can make an impact or excuses, but we cannot make both. If we want our lives to make a difference, we don’t have the time to make excuses. Nowhere in Scripture do we ever see Jesus make an excuse. He was never too tired, too hungry, too busy, too young, or too old. He didn’t worry about His social status or what others thought of Him.

impact or excuses,mission,commitment,discipleship,impact,excuses,fear,love,1 John 4:18,love casts out fear,Deuteronomy 31:6,never leave or forsake you,Philippians 4:13,can do all things through Christ

And He never put off what He knew He had to do. As Jesus hung on the cross, he said, “It is finished.” He completed His mission. The lesson is powerful: when you refuse to make excuses, your impact increases exponentially.

The Road Ahead

July 9, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

The road ahead is not always clear. Obstacles, expected and unexpected, will block our way and cause us to question the path we’ve chosen. Sometimes the road ahead is well lit, and we move forward with confidence. More often, it is so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face. We’re lost, confused, and, if we’re honest, scared out of our minds. We do not understand what lies ahead.

road ahead,mission,fear,faith,love,Romans 8:31,who can be against us,Romans 8:38-39,nothing can separate,Deuteronomy 31:6,never leave or forsake

One of the beautiful results of following Jesus is we may not always know where we’re going, but we always know with whom we’re going. The road ahead does not seem so unnerving knowing Jesus is at once leading the way, watching our back, and walking right beside us.
