In his classic work, “The Imitation of Christ”, Thomas à Kempis wrote: “Strive to do another’s will rather than your own. Always choose to have less rather than more. Always seek the lowest place and be subject to everyone else. Wish and pray at all times God’s will be fulfilled in you. If we will do this, we will enter into the inheritance of peace and rest.”

These words, written nearly six hundred years ago still hold great wisdom for us today. If we would live our lives in such a way, we would slough off much stress and anxiety. I believe most of the stress, regret, and worry we feel is due to our focus being on ourselves rather than on God and others.

Living the Life You Were Created to Live

It is my strong belief each of us have been created with a unique blend of passions, talents, and skills to accomplish the work God intended for us (Ephesians 2:10). I am also convinced God’s will for your life is to obey the things He told you to do, to put the needs of other’s first, and to reflect the matchless character of God in everything you do.

A life devoted to Christ will, at its core, be a life that looks like His. Grasping these principles will be amazingly freeing for you. Even for those who get this, some stumble on how to practically live it out in their day to day lives. I’d like to try and answer that question.

Are You Wasting Time?

One of the greatest gifts God has given us is time. Time is life. There is no living without it. Originally we were created to live outside of time, but our rebellion against God led to us being bound by the limits of time as we now know it (Genesis 2:16-17). We will all die (Hebrews 9:27), and so we must all maximize the time we have been given to further the mission of Christ and to build the Kingdom of God.

This is why each of us was created, and it is the will of God for each of our lives. The trouble is, few live as if time were indeed limited. We dream of somedays and plan for next year. Rarely do we focus on what is most important right here and right now.  Knowing the clock is ticking, I have to ask, why are you wasting time?

Single-Minded

I was recently reading Calvin Miller’s excellent “The Disciplined Life” for a second time and came across a statement that exploded off the page. The author wrote, “To hold anything in our hearts that is contrary to the single-minded call is to split our attention between Jesus and whatever else is calling for first place in our allegiance.”
This is the heart of discipleship.

There is no place in the life of a follower of Christ for anything other than Jesus. A divided kingdom will certainly fall (Mark 3:24), and a divided heart will never find lasting peace or victory. We either solely belong to Jesus or we do not belong to Him at all.

Living Intentionally

I’ve been focused lately on living intentionally. My theme this year is “Devotion”, and I’ve already discovered increasing my devotion to Christ is nearly impossible without ordering my days in an intentional way.  Unless I am very specific about how I will choose to spend my time, my time will get spent in ways that in no way reflect my devotion to Christ. At least at this stage of my own walk with God, unstructured time rarely defaults to time spent with Him.
