Refocus and Rebalance

July 15, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus is Lord,Lord of your life,Jesus first,God first,focus,balance,peace,joy,comfort,rest,depression,delusion,defeat

Do you ever feel lost, depressed, and unsure of your next move? In Western culture our lives have become insanely busy leaving little to no margin and literally no room for rest. When we aren’t busy we tend to make ourselves busy doing something. Often we become so stressed out that our couch becomes a welcome retreat. Mindless channel and web surfing consumes the few uncommitted moments of our days. In the midst of all this one has to wonder where the victorious life is that was promised by Jesus.  Where is the peace, the joy, the rest, and the comfort?

Risk and Faith

I have often said that following Jesus is not for the faint of heart. Generally I’ve spoken about this in terms of the gritty, sometimes dangerous, consequences of being a follower of Jesus. In numerous countries around the world, following Jesus could easily cost you your life. Even in the West, declaring you are a disciple will often be met with sneers and derision. But there is another way that dedicating oneself to Jesus is not for the timid. He will often lead you to places that are far outside your comfort zone. To follow Jesus with all your heart will require great faith and will surely involve great risk.

Burn Away

June 27, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

Meredith Andrews,Worth It All,Not for a moment,refiners fire,character,integrity,discipleship

There is a song on Meredith Andrews latest CD, “Worth It All“, titled “Burn Away”. The lyrics of the song express the desire to remove everything from our lives that is not of God.

Burn Away
Everything that breaks your heart
Everything that is not love
Purify my every thought
Take Away
Everything that comes between us
Everything that is untrue
Jesus make me more like You
Burn away

What an incredible prayer for our own lives. This is what true discipleship looks like. When we rid ourselves of all that is not of Christ, we will then brightly reflect His glory. [Read more…] about Burn Away

Fulfill Your Calling

June 24, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

why am I here,why are we here,life purpose,life mission,disciple,following Jesus,being on mission,living on purpose,purpose driven life

I recently read a blog post by Chris Brown, a pastor at North Coast Church. In it he said something that rocked the way I have programmed myself to think. Pastor Brown said we should, “Seek to fulfill your calling, not your potential.” For years I have read and taught that each of us should be doing everything we could in order to maximize our potential. I always thought that was what Emerson meant when he said, “Don’t die with your music still inside you.” Now I see that piece of wisdom a little differently. Think about Emerson’s quote in regards to calling, not potential. How might that change the way you live?

Unfinished Business

June 13, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

Richard Stearns, unfinished, the hole in our gospel, why are we here, what's the meaning of life, finding your purpose, why did Jesus leave

Richard Stearns, President of World Vision and author of the highly recommended “The Hole in Our Gospel”, has a new book entitled, “Unfinished”. The premise of his new book is that followers of Christ waiting for the return of their Savior have work to do here on earth. Indeed, it’s the reason for our lives. If we are not pursuing the mission of Christ, doing the things He told us to, then what in the world are we doing here? Outside of Jesus, life is meaningless. Followers of Christ understand we have a purpose. We have work to do.
