Living Light

I recently heard a song by Kari Jobe called, “We Are”. The lyrics say, “We are the light of the world/ We are the city on a hill”. Combined with the beautiful melody, it was very moving. Then I began to reflect a bit more and do what I do best: ask questions. As Christians, are the lives we lead really lighting up the world? Are we truly a beacon in the darkness? How many believers listen to songs like the one mentioned above, feel good about the message, and then carry on with their lives as usual? It’s the modern equivalent of always hearing but never understanding (Matthew 13:14). We don’t put our faith into action, or more specifically, we are ever learning but never doing.

Who’s Following Whom?

Many people endeavor to follow Jesus, but most end up expecting Him to follow them. Whereas in the beginning we surrendered our lives to Christ, the way we live day to day is more like inviting Him to follow us on our quest to grab our dreams and accomplish our goals. When times get tough, it’s great to have Jesus by your side. Just in case we get into a bind, there’s nothing quite like having the Son of God show up and rescue you from your troubles. Once back on solid footing, we are quick to reassume the lead and relegate Jesus to a secondary position, with Him presumably just waiting to be summoned when we need Him.

Spending Everything

Do you consider yourself a world changer? If you choose to follow Christ, that will be your mission. It doesn’t take much effort to realize our world is an absolute mess. Financial systems are crashing, morals are nonexistent, and violence is out of control. The message of Jesus is a cure for all that is wrong with society. It is the job of His people to take His good news to the furthest and darkest corners of our planet. If we impart the love of God to the masses, the peace of Christ will heal our nations. The only question is, are we up to the task?

The Kingdom of God

For roughly three short years two thousand years ago, we got a brief glimpse of what the Kingdom of God looks like. When Jesus lived among us, He healed all those who were sick. He partied with the outcasts of the culture and chastised the societal elite. He was at once revolutionary and peaceful. Jesus knew no strangers and loved unconditionally. No wonder such large crowds followed Him; who wouldn’t want the slightest glimpse of Heaven? Who wouldn’t want to experience what life was truly meant to be? Jesus showed us what a life lived for Him, a Kingdom life, was all about. He set the example that all His disciples commit to follow.

Serving God No Matter the Cost

Saeed Abedini is a pastor who was falsely accused and arrested over a year ago in Iran. Much has been written about his arrest and subsequent imprisonment. My goal here is not to retell this tragic tale, but rather highlight the amazing way God is using him despite his difficult circumstances. While incarcerated in Iran’s most brutal prison, even in the midst of enduring regular torture, Saeed has led over thirty people to Christ within those prison walls. While it would be inconsistent with the character of God to say that it is God’s will for Saeed to be suffering in prison, it’s important to recognize that Saeed continues to do God’s will even when the forces of evil are doing all they can to thwart the advancement of the Kingdom.
