Serving God No Matter the Cost

God's will for your life,finding God's will,Saeed Abedini,religious persecution,Lord of your life,Jesus first,God first

Saeed Abedini is a pastor who was falsely accused and arrested over a year ago in Iran. Much has been written about his arrest and subsequent imprisonment. My goal here is not to retell this tragic tale, but rather highlight the amazing way God is using him despite his difficult circumstances. While incarcerated in Iran’s most brutal prison, even in the midst of enduring regular torture, Saeed has led over thirty people to Christ within those prison walls. While it would be inconsistent with the character of God to say that it is God’s will for Saeed to be suffering in prison, it’s important to recognize that Saeed continues to do God’s will even when the forces of evil are doing all they can to thwart the advancement of the Kingdom.

The Adventurous Life

In his book, “The Disciplined Life”, author Calvin Miller says that most people view Christianity as a giant brake pedal whereas in reality it should be seen as a steering wheel. I love the analogy. So many people, including far too many Christians, think the way to follow Christ is to stop doing various activities. Traditionally the church has spoken out against things like smoking, drinking, dancing, movies, rock music, certain dress and hair styles, tattoos, and on and on. If we only stop or avoid doing certain things, we will be more Godly; or so goes the prevailing wisdom.

A Life Well Spent

sheep and the goats, life's purpose, living a full life, being ready to die,Oliver Wendell Holmes, die with your music still in you, living for Jesus

What is most important to you? Is it Jesus or something less than that? Our lives will be spent in the pursuit of something. Some will pursue security, some comfort, and others fame. Anything we pursue other than Jesus will leave us hollow when we reach the end of our days.  When you lie on your deathbed, what will you look back on and wish that you would have accomplished? While perhaps a bit morbid, this can be a very healthy exercise in which to engage. For what will you have needed to live in order to die with no regrets?

What Do You Want?

What is it you really want out of life? Are you happy where you are or do you feel like you should be doing more? Walt Whitman said that, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation”. We put on a great façade, but inside we are secretly dying. Christians are particularly adept at this. We show up every Sunday determined to convince everyone gathered that we have it all together. Deep within us there is a curious but insistent longing. We know we were created for more but we can’t seem to put our finger on what that “more” looks like.

The Local Church

Bill Hybels has said, and I agree, that “The local church is the hope of the world.” In times of tragedy, it is often the local churches that come to the aid of those in need. For many, attending a weekend service is the only exposure they ever get to the teachings of Jesus and the love of God. Stories abound of people who, having reached the end of their rope, stumbled into a church service just to check out the “God thing”. Beyond all of this, the local church should be the launching point – and the refueling station – for believers to go about the great commission of taking the good news of Jesus throughout the world.
