Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Standing Firm

January 11, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

It has been said if you can’t stand firm, then you won’t stand at all. We see this proven out in our spiritual lives. No one can claim they stand for Jesus if they won’t stand for Him under trials and difficulties. Standing firm means to stand without wavering. You can’t be a warrior for Jesus one day and live your life as if He wasn’t Lord the next.

In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul tells us to always be prepared for the day of battle by putting on the full armor of God. If we do that, we will hold fast to Christ regardless of what the enemy sends our way (Ephesians 6:13). The easiest way to not lose our footing is to never take our eyes off Jesus, never stop delighting in His Word, and never stop reminding ourselves that our life is not our own (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Galatians 2:19-20).

Making the Most of Our Time

January 4, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Paul instructs believers to always be making the most of our time because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:15-16). I don’t think any of us doubt that the days we are living in are evil. Never in my lifetime have we seen such hate, violence, and disregard for God as we do right now. So, in these evil days, how do we redeem the time so we spend it focusing on God instead of the evil in the world?

Without intention and guidelines, it’s too easy to be drawn into the darkness instead of dwelling in the light. We will never passively make the most of our time. It must be something we consciously choose to do. That means we’re going to stand out, people will probably mock us, and we may even face persecution. But this is the life Jesus calls us to, and it is the life we choose for the sake of Christ.

Who Will You Be This Year?

January 1, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Right now, you can decide what the next year will hold. As we begin a new year, ask yourself, “Who will you be this year?” Will you be the same person you were last year, or will this year be the one where you finally embark on a journey to draw closer to God no matter what it takes? Only you can decide what the next 365 days will hold for your spiritual life.

I’m not talking about emotion or anything metaphysical. I’m talking about your relationship with Jesus Christ. You know exactly who He is, the unchanging, all-powerful, all-loving, risen, and returning Son of God. The question is, who will you be this year? Today can be the first day of an intense journey into oneness with Christ.

Never Say Amen

December 28, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

We should spend our lives in constant prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Some portions of the Bible can be confusing to understand without deeper study, but most of it is perfectly clear for anyone to understand. This command to “pray constantly” is one of those teachings. There is no way to interpret this command as making sure we have a ten-minute quiet time in the morning, or that we give thanks before a meal.

Those are fine things to practice, but they are only part of what the Bible commands us to do. To pray constantly means we never say amen. All day and every day, we are to be in perpetual communication with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We Must Keep His Commands

December 7, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Last time (see “Do We Love Him?”), we began to contemplate whether the love we have for Christ is genuine. Because of the importance of this topic, we’re going to continue thinking about it today. Jesus said many would come to Him thinking they know Him, but in fact do not (Matthew 7:22-23). So many are deceived by the “easy believism” and faith without consequences teachings of our day that Hell awaits a multitude of people who think they are in Christ but will find out He never knew them.

It’s why this subject is of vital importance, one we do well to consider with great soberness. Nothing is more important than your relationship with Jesus. We do not know Him if we do not love Him, and we know to love Him means we must keep His commands (John 14:15).
