Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

You Are Enough

January 15, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

There is an electronic billboard near me that frequently displays the simple message, “You Are Enough!” I suppose it’s a nice sentiment, meant to be encouraging to the morning masses driving by, but the lie it purports is both deceiving and damning. You are not enough. Neither am I. There is nothing any of us can ever do to be close to being enough.

If any of us were enough, Jesus would not have had to die on our behalf. The truth is, every human being is woefully inadequate. All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). If there is to be any hope for us, we must spend the rest of our days getting rid of all sense of self-sufficiency and surrendering to the surpassing sufficiency of our perfect God and King.

The Birth of Christ

December 25, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

In the history of man, through all the rush and bustle, there was one day when all of Heaven held their collective spiritual breath. That was the day Jesus came to dwell among His creation in human form. The birth of Jesus was not His first visit to the earth that He spoke into existence, but it was the first time He came as one of us.

While remaining fully God, He at the same time became fully man, so He could become the sacrifice we so desperately need. The birth of Christ was a brief respite from the normal goings-on of the world. From that moment, nothing would ever be the same again.

Indulging in Entertainment

September 21, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

In the last post, “The Relevance of the Church”, we discussed how entertainment has crept into our churches and dramatically changed what a service looks like. While most churches start with the goal of submitting to the Lordship of Christ and being a living demonstration of His life, over time, it is common for churches to become the sum of the people attending. They begin to reflect the whims and preferences of those who come through the doors rather than maintaining a rigorous adherence to Biblical teaching and structure.

This means if we want to have more Christ-like churches, each of us must become more Christ-like in our lives. Don’t wish your church was better. Focus on becoming more Christ-like yourself. Our churches are obsessed with entertaining the masses because of our penchant for indulging in entertainment in our personal lives. If enough of us would take the call of Christ seriously by consuming our thoughts with Him instead of earthly pleasures and desires, our churches would once again be the light and refuge that our world needs.

Full of Purpose

September 14, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Steven J. Lawson said, “The greatest knowledge is to know Christ. The greatest adventure is to follow Him. The greatest privilege is to serve Him.” What a fantastic backdrop against which to live our lives! If we ingest this and use it as a guide, our lives will be full of purpose, full of meaning, and devoid of regrets. Read the first line again. Doesn’t that excite you? We have the privilege of knowing the Son of God on a personal level.

Incredibly, He invites us to follow Him and to partner with Him in His mission of declaring the gospel to the ends of the earth (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). Somehow, someway, He deems us worthy to be His disciples. He regards us worthy to be His servants, His hands and feet in this world. We’re talking about the Creator of everything and the King of the Universe. That’s astonishing!

Disciplined

July 27, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

When it comes to self-discipline, I see myself as more disciplined than many, but less disciplined than I should be. Reflecting on my life, I find I am now more disciplined than at other times in my life and less disciplined than at others. All this to say that self-discipline is a challenge we must constantly address and perhaps never fully master.

And yet it is key not only to a productive life but to living life in a manner that glorifies and pleases our Lord. To be disciplined in ways that do not promote our spiritual growth may be noble pursuits, but in the end, they won’t count for anything. The only discipline worth pursuing is that which brings us closer to Christ and molds us into His image.
