The Triune God

August 18, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

One of the great mysteries of our God is that He is a triune God. We serve one God, but He exists in three persons. He is not three different gods, but the one true God, existing in three persons who are all equal. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are of the same essence. There is not space enough here to do an in-depth explanation of the Trinity. My purpose here is to warn against a wrong understanding of the Trinity because it is of vital importance to understanding the gospel.

If you believe the Bible to be the inerrant, infallible Word of God as I do, then we must recognize there are mysteries in it we cannot understand in our humanness. Some day God will make it clear. For now, the Trinity must be something we accept by faith, even though we do not comprehend its possibility.

Discouraged?

August 8, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Are you feeling tired or discouraged? Life has gotten more challenging for Christians in the West in recent years. While our brothers and sisters across the globe have long been dealing with pressures worse than we currently face, for most of us, persecution is new. Pastors in Canada are jailed simply for holding a church service. Churches in America are occasionally overrun with protesters.

The pressure to conform to society’s ideas of wrong and right or face ostracization is rampant. This is not the world in which most of us grew up. Having spent most of our lives at ease, the time has come when our faith is being put to the test. For some, hope seems lost. But take heart; this is not the end. Your reward is coming.

The Anatomy of Compromise

June 16, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

How has the Western church fallen so far away from biblical truth? Few seemed to pay attention to the voices of those warning the church was sliding into compromise with the world over the last fifty years or more. I was having a discussion with a recent Bible college graduate and I asked him if his particular college, which has long had a reputation as a solid institute, was still standing firm on the Word or if they were suffering from the cancer of wokeness inflicting most of our colleges and seminaries these days.

His response was the professors were solid, but the student body was drifting rapidly into liberalism. My friend then commented that he felt the problem was there was truth on both sides and people were prone to swing too far in one direction or the other. I submit it is this kind of thinking that got us into the mess in which we now find ourselves.

Fear God

June 2, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Why do you fear God? Perhaps a better first question to ask is, do you fear God? Scripture commands us many times to live in the fear of God (Deuteronomy 6:13; 1 Samuel 12:24; Proverbs 9:10; 2 Corinthians 5:11; Philippians 2:12-13; 1 Peter 2:17; Revelation 14:7). So, it’s not a question of whether we should, but imperative that we must. With all the sermons teaching God is love these days, it may seem a bit out of step to be talking about fearing God. Humans do not typically fear those we love.

But God is not just someone else we love. He is the holy, righteous, and glorious Creator of the Universe, the Lord of lords, and the King of kings. God is indeed the highest expression of love. John told us this plainly in his epistle to the Church (1 John 4:8). However, we do not serve a one-dimensional God. Every emotion is magnified and perfected in Him. Thus, jealous, zealous, and righteous anger are also part of who He is. To quote Jonathan Edwards, “… it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God”.

A Meditation on Psalm 121

February 21, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

What do you do when worry overtakes you? Where do you turn? The author of Psalm 121 knew the answer. He lifted His eyes towards Heaven and knew His help came from the Lord (Psalm 121:1-2). We must never forget this truth when the troubles of life threaten to overwhelm us. The very One who made all of Heaven and the earth is an ever-present help in our times of need and distress (Psalm 46:1-3).

God never leaves or abandons us (Deuteronomy 31:6). If God is for us, no person or circumstance can stand against us (Romans 8:31-32). Jesus defeated death itself on our behalf (2 Timothy 1:10; John 11:25; Hebrews 2:14-15; Revelation 1:17-18). There is no longer a reason to fear anything. It’s difficult to feel overwhelmed when you are fearless!
