Whose life are you living? Are you engaged in the things that allow you to utilize the gifts God has given to you? Do you seek to glorify Him even when it means looking foolish in the eyes of your family and friends? Too few of us live like this. Instead we live out our days blending in with the culture while looking for any opening we can find to get ahead. Rather than living as God planned for us to live, we cave to the pressures of life and seek comfort in alternative solutions. As a result, we end up living from a script written by someone other than our Creator.
We envy those who seem to live life on their own terms, answering to no one but themselves. Celebrity worship is epidemic in the Western world (and you thought idolatry was an ancient activity!). Our culture has made it cool, even necessary, to emulate the lives of the “rich and the beautiful”. How amazing their lives must be, flush with cash and beholden to no one; before we even realize it, we find ourselves wishing for a life of celebrity rather than one of obedience. We wish to be served rather than serve, to be worshipped instead of worshipping.
When we begin to buy the lies of Satan, we become trapped in living life on his terms. Saying we’re living life our way is simply code for admitting we are reading from Satan’s script. Our activities are directly out of his playbook. While most would never consciously side with the devil, Jesus made it undeniably clear that if we are not for Christ, we are against Him (Matthew 12:30). We forget how short our days are. Life is brief, and then it’s gone. Like a morning fog that quickly burns away, so is our time on earth.
The point is we cannot waste a single moment reading from the wrong script. Jesus created us for specific work and gave us an arsenal of gifts and talents to accomplish that work (Ephesians 2:10; 1 Peter 4:10; Romans 12:3-8). No matter your opinion of yourself, the fact remains that you are of infinite worth to the Creator of the world. Jesus loves you and longs for your participation in the cosmic dance of life. He wants you to live according to His plan so that you might experience the depths of joy that can only be found from obedience to His words.
So whose life will you live? Will it be a self-centered, self-sufficient life that borrows every move from the plans of Satan? Or will you surrender to the Giver of life, live from His script, and become all you were designed and created to be? It’s an obvious choice, but we all struggle with it because the enemy is strong. The good news is that our God is stronger. He cannot be defeated, and neither can we as long as we are following Him step by step. Don’t waste your life reading from the wrong script.
