In a world of hopelessness, where is your hope? Since it’s an election year in America, many place their hope in a politician or political party. Some place their hope in the amount of money they stockpile or perhaps in a certain level of success. Getting through each day surrounded by so much hate, anger, and violence requires we hope in *something* or we will crumble under despair.
Putting our hope in anything in this world is putting hope in something that will not last. Perhaps it will last your lifetime, but recognize everything this world offers is temporary. Only Jesus is worthy of our hope, because only Jesus is eternal.
The writer of Hebrews confirms this for us as he writes, “We have this hope as an anchor for our lives, safe and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain” (Hebrews 6:19). Jesus is the only safety and security we will ever find. Hope placed in Him is well placed and will never let you down. Hope placed in the things this world offers is misplaced and will only lead to your disappointment and destruction. So, where is your hope? Is it in Jesus or the things of this world?
Almost everyone who knows me would describe me as self-sufficient to a fault. It’s not that I don’t appreciate help, it’s just I seldom see the need for it! Just a little proof that we are all flawed individuals! I used to revel in being self-sufficient, feeling I could handle the worst life could throw at me without flinching. That’s not only naïve but disgustingly proud. Putting aside the fact none of us are truly self-sufficient but rather live and breathe only by God’s grace, understand that the notion of self-sufficiency means we find hope in ourselves. If your life and history are anything like mine, that’s an absurd and laughable proposition.
As wicked as this world is, it doesn’t hold the flicker of a candle compared to Hell. Every one of us has sinned and fallen short of God’s standard for entrance into His Kingdom. (Romans 3:23). That means every last one of us has a one-way ticket stamped with a destination of Hell. Forever. That’s about as hopeless as it gets. So, where is your hope? How can you escape what you deserve? The only alternative is Jesus. He’s not one of many options (John 14:6), He is *the* solution. There is Jesus and nothing and no one else (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Where is your hope? If all your hope isn’t in Jesus, then you have no hope at all. Everything in this world is dead or dying. Jesus is our living hope (1 Peter 1:3-4)! Only Christ has overcome death and now offers us eternity with Him. It’s an eternity bathed in hope! Today, the culture and media will bombard you with messages urging you to place your hope in something other than Jesus. The attacks are relentless. But there is only one way, one truth, and one hope. This hope is the Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing else can satisfy and no one else can save. The choice is yours. Where is your hope?
