Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

The Tragedy of Neglect

July 28, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Few things are more detrimental to your walk with Christ than ignoring the little things. The tragedy of neglect is that good habits disappear quickly when left untended. The disciplines you’ve instilled in your life that have allowed you to make great strides in your walk with Christ can dissolve overnight if you don’t do the work of maintaining them every day. Cherished relationships wither and fade if we do not feed them.

We must renew our commitment to living the life of a disciple every day. We can never take our foot off the pedal and begin coasting. There are no days off. Without daily attention and determination, the pull of sin will undermine everything we live for and relegate us to a weak and wasted life.

No Neutral Position

July 18, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

In a world of compromise and so-called “tolerance”, we must remember there is no neutral position in Christ. We are for Him or against Him (Mark 9:40; John 3:36), and we can never stand in a middle that does not exist. Today’s culture regards those who accept whatever is popular as the favored class. Those of us who push back against the tide of perversion, selfishness, and immorality are branded as outcasts and even criminals.

Light has no fellowship with darkness (II Corinthians 6: 14; Ephesians 5:11), so we must abstain from drinking from the fountain of popular thought. The temptation to go with the flow is great, but if you are truly for Christ, you must stand firm on His Word and obey His commands.

Compromise

July 14, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Modern Christianity has lost the thread. Once we marveled at the Savior who died for us, but now His death is just a trendy symbol we wear on our clothing and around our necks. We once revered the Bible as the fully sufficient, inerrant, and complete revelation of God, but now we yearn for the teaching of ungodly men who refute even the plainest teachings of God’s Word. What happened?

For decades, we have compromised the clear and authoritative laws of God to make our churches more palatable for sinners, more comfortable for saints, and more profitable for preachers. Little by little, inch by inch, we let the world slip in between the cracks of our doubt and unbelief. What remains are pathetic and powerless churches ineffective in carrying out the Great Commission.

Prioritize Jesus

July 7, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

It seems no matter how hard we try, we never have enough time to do everything we want and need to do. In all of history, we’ve never had more options about how to spend our time than we do today. With all the options comes a sort of paralysis. It’s too much. I recently heard a psychologist state anxiety results from too many options and too many images.

We get anxious because the things of this world overstimulate us with possibilities. Satan is clever, and we can’t ignore the brilliance of his strategy. By overwhelming our senses, we experience stress, which hinders our decision-making processes. We must have a strategy to combat the overwhelming options in our world. We must learn to prioritize Jesus in advance so we can defend against the onslaught of possibilities.

Don’t Be True to Yourself

July 4, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

For most of my life, I’ve heard people say we should be authentic and be our true selves. This sounds like good advice, but it’s the worst advice a follower of Jesus could ever follow. To be true to yourself stands in stark contrast to how we are called to live. It is prideful, putting our feelings and preferences ahead of God’s. The advice isn’t far removed from the way the serpent tempted Eve.

He convinced her there was a better way than the one prescribed by God. The devil deceived Eve into believing she could be more than she was. It was the desire to be something more, something she believed to be truer to who she was that she shared with Adam. The rest is the unfortunate history of the fall of man and the source of all our problems today.
