The Ten Commandments

September 22, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Last week, we discussed what God’s law requires of us (see “God’s Law”). But I would be remiss if we didn’t do a quick review of what God’s law actually says. God gave His law in the ten commandments recorded in the book of Exodus (Exodus 20:1-17). These are not old and irrelevant. The death and resurrection of Jesus did not nullify the law.

In fact, Jesus explained He didn’t come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). Only Christ has lived a life that perfectly followed the laws of God. By obeying, He set the example of how we all should live. Psalm 1:1-3 tells us those who meditate on the law of the Lord are happy, peaceful, and unshakeable. Don’t you want a life like that?

God’s Law

September 15, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

What does the law of God require? If we want to live according to His Word, what must we do? The answer is as simple as it is difficult. The law of God requires our complete and perfect obedience to the Lord at all times. What is easy to define is far from easy to live. In fact, we can never do it. We can obey sometimes in some ways, but every one of us will fail to always obey perfectly.

Perfect obedience means no lapses. For this reason, every one of us is guilty of breaking the law of God. If not for the redeeming blood of Jesus, we would be eternally condemned. God’s law is perfect; we are not. But in Jesus, the holy God and Creator of everything sees us as perfect.

Live to Glorify God

September 8, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

How do we live to glorify God? Preachers, Bible teachers, and authors continually tell us our lives should glorify God. But how do we do that? I think anyone who has a sincere love for Christ desires to glorify Him. We want to make Him known to the world. Still, “glorifying” Him seems elusive. It’s a strange word, and one rarely used in common conversation.

To glorify God is a high calling. The Westminster Shorter Catechism states, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” Bringing glory to God must be the primary focus of our lives. God created us to glorify Him. To do anything less with our lives is to live outside of God’s Will.

Long Way from Eden

September 1, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

As we look around our world today, it’s hard to remember that when God finished creating everything in the heavens and on earth, He called it very good (Genesis 1:31). We’re a long way from Eden and the paradise the Lord created. Often, Evil and ugliness hide the wonder and beauty of our world. This isn’t how things are supposed to be.

The Lord created a beautiful world full of beautiful landscapes and amazing creatures. God created everything to reflect His glory and to cause us to glorify Him. Now the world is dying, groaning for a return to its original beauty, desperate to return to the state of being “very good” (Romans 8:22).

Run From the Darkness

August 22, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

The Bible commands us to run from the darkness (1 Timothy 6:11), not to see how much of it we can let into our life before it becomes a problem. In our churches and our lives, we see the results of compromise compounded over years. We now see it on vulgar display in our country every day. I remember embracing a more progressive form of Christianity for many years. A more socially hip church and theology seemed like a welcome relief from what I perceived to be the tired and stagnating Christianity of my youth.

Satan is a clever and effective liar. You have to give him that. It’s one thing to be deceived, another to admit it, but something even more to turn from it. This is where we find ourselves today. After decades of compromising with the culture, we now find the faith of our fathers in somewhat of a death spiral.
