Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

The Church is in Trouble

October 30, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Before beginning, let me make one thing abundantly clear: the Church of Jesus Christ will never be defeated. No matter what Satan throws at her, God’s Church will weather the storm and come out victorious (Matthew 16:18). To my knowledge, no war has ever been a unanimous victory. Even on the winning side, battles and lives will be lost.

In the same way, it may appear the Church loses some battles—even though we know God is in control of everything so even an apparent loss is useful to Him in leading His bride to victory—the Church will not lose the war, will never stay knocked down, and in the end will stand. With all that said, I submit the Church is in trouble today.

Whatever We Desire

October 26, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Many claim the promise of 1 John 5:14-15, thinking that prayer is the way of getting whatever we desire. A quick reading reveals that it does say whatever we ask, God will give to us. As creatures of our culture, we don’t go any deeper than what makes us feel good. Like everything else in modern Christianity, we’re content to skim the surface of the passage, make it apply to our lives, name it, and claim it.

This is what decades of false teaching, poor exposition, and outright heresy have done to the thinking of the contemporary church. The good news is, yes, Jesus does promise to give us whatever we ask. The bad news for those seeking an easy avenue to health and wealth is this promise comes with a condition that one can only understand by a careful reading and understanding of this rich and deep promise.

Living in the Last Days

October 23, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Are we living in the last days? Many books, sermons, and pundits would say yes. Surveying the state of the world and comparing it with Biblical prophecy would also seem to point to it being a possibility. Whether or not it’s true, no one can say for certain (Matthew 24:36-44). This isn’t the first period in history when people were convinced things couldn’t get any worse and surely the Lord’s return was imminent.

Whenever there is talk of living in the last days, there is also an increased focus on making sure you are ready to meet the Lord. Certainly, that is sound advice, but with the knowledge Christ’s return will come as a surprise, doesn’t it make more sense to live in a constant state of readiness? Since our King could return any moment, shouldn’t we be preparing for Him regardless of what’s happening around us?

Bad Advice

October 12, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

There is a lot of bad advice out there. Some of the worst advice we can ever give to someone is to say, “Follow your heart.” This advice is rampant in self-help circles and the culture at large. To someone waffling between options or contemplating a career change, it sounds like wise counsel. But as is often the case, the wisdom of man is foolishness (1 Corinthians 3:18-20). Jesus never told people to follow their hearts. He told them to follow Him (John 8:12; John 12:26).

When you follow your heart, you will be listening to your carnal desires. God’s Word says the heart is more deceitful than anything else and incurable (Jeremiah 17:9). When we follow our heart, we are deceiving ourselves. We are playing ourselves for the fool. Only by following Jesus will we ever find the peace, rest, and fulfillment that our hearts desire.

God’s Word, Not Our Feelings

October 9, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

There is much emphasis on feelings today, both in the Church and in the culture at large. If you watch religious programming, you won’t have to wait long until you hear a preacher talking about the feelings that will come over you when the Holy Spirit takes hold. Instead of emphasizing what the Bible teaches, these men and women promote experiencing the power of God’s Spirit through the manifestation of laughter, falling down, convulsing, or babbling unintelligible nonsense.

Within the culture, the prevailing attitude is people can and should do whatever makes them feel good. All of this is in direct conflict with the truth of scripture. As Christians, we must always defer to God’s Word, not our feelings.
