Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Do Something

September 23, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

We Christians in the West are very talented excuse-makers. There are always a million reasons why we don’t do something to further the Kingdom of God. Behind all the excuses is the simple reality of we’re too busy looking like and buying into the culture around us to have time to build the Kingdom. With so much darkness, so much pain and suffering, so much hunger and need all around us, how can we not do something?

Jesus had a habit of taking time out of His day to reach put and supply the needs of those around Him. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and protected the weak. Jesus was never to busy to do something. He never made an excuse to not do something.

The Purpose of Life

August 22, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

What did you do yesterday to build the Kingdom? What will you do today? Those two questions may be the most important you can ever ask yourself. Indeed, these questions frame the purpose of life. There is nothing else worth living for other than Jesus. We will spend our lives building His Kingdom or building our own.  The Kingdom of God is eternal.

It will exist long after our own little kingdoms have faded in history, washed away by the tides of time. But Jesus remains. His Kingdom endures forever. Why would we spend our lives pursuing things which will not last when we can spend it for that which lasts forever?

Exhausted

August 1, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

We’re all busy; we all seem to be tired. Many, if I not most of us, would describe ourselves as exhausted. We’re exhausted trying to keep up with the demand’s society puts on us, and by the constant endeavor to have more – whatever “more” actually is. It’s our own fault. In most cases, the fact we are exhausted is due to the choices we’ve made and for the things we’ve allowed into our lives.  Often, we are busy simply being busy. I’ve known people who seemed to feel the more crammed their calendar was, the more important they were.

They got busy scheduling meetings even when it meant double and triple-booking themselves. It’s a bit of insanity. There is, however, a healthy way to become exhausted. When we spend our days in the relentless pursuit of Jesus, we will undoubtedly become exhausted, but it will be the sweetest sense of tired you will ever know.

Not Gonna Bow

July 25, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Years ago, Russ Taff wrote a song called, “Not Gonna Bow”, based on the well-known Bible story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.  The theme of the song was how we as Christ-followers should refuse to bow to any idols, regardless of the consequences. There is nothing more important than to keep Jesus first in your life. It is the essence of surrendering our hearts to Christ. If He isn’t first, then we aren’t surrendered.

Every day we are tempted to bow down to someone or something other than Jesus. When we put anything other than Christ first in our hearts, it is an idol and needs to be thrown out of our lives. Idolatry is subtle and creeps in constantly if we are not diligent to guard against it.

Stealing Time

July 22, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Time is rarely stolen from us. Except perhaps in the cases of kidnapping, wrongful imprisonment, or being detained without cause, time is never stolen from anyone. Instead, I propose our time is, for the most part, either given away or sold. We all have the same number of seconds available to us each day. We choose how much of our time will be given away, and how much will be sold.

Every day we are charged to steward the time allotted to us in a way that honors God and furthers His mission and His Kingdom. If we are not vigilant, we will squander the time entrusted to us or sell it in exchange for our comfort, entertainment, and security.
