The life of Jesus was marked by humility, yet we who claim to be His followers rarely live with the same goal. We spend most of our days in vain pursuits, determined to climb the ladder, find happiness, avoid suffering, and generally promoting ourselves at every opportunity. While Jesus spent his life relinquishing His own glory, we spend our lives pursuing it.

To be a follower of Jesus, we must spend our lives dedicated to living as He did. Yet somehow we’ve twisted that into some bizarre blend of the American dream. The unspoken truth is the so-called American dream is in direct opposition to the dreams of God for your life.

Leveraging Your Life

No matter who we are or what we do, our primary mission in life is to leverage everything we have to further the Kingdom of God. What this means is none of have any excuse for not serving God in every area of our lives. For too long we’ve made a distinction between those “in the ministry” and those who have traditional or secular jobs.

In our family life, we look to others to give us spiritual direction while shirking our own responsibilities in that area. How we live our lives at work and at home will be a direct expression of where our hearts are in relation to our Creator. With that in mind, how well are you reflecting Christ? Obedience to God

We resist obedience to God. In truth, we resist anything that infringes on our self-will. So we must answer the question of which is more important: our will or God’s will? A man may throw himself on his face and sob out his troubles to the Lord and yet have no intention to obey the commandments of Christ. Strong emotion and tears may be no more than the outcropping of a vexed spirit, evidence of stubborn resistance to God’s known will”. We are a people prone to going through the motions without ever experiencing the profound power of God found in a life of obedience to Him.

Sending People to Hell

Someone went to Hell today while you played video games. Someone didn’t get the opportunity to learn about Jesus because you were busy watching television. We say we’re committed to Jesus but live mostly for ourselves.  For too many Christians, the only thing to which they are committed is their own safety, security, comfort, and living like everyone else in their culture.

We fail to live for Jesus because we’re too busy keeping up with the Jones’s. Our apathy is literally sending people to Hell. It’s not their fault, it’s ours. We don’t tell them, we don’t reflect Jesus with our lives, and when it comes down to it we find too many things more important than living like a disciple of Jesus.

The Point of it All

The point of it all, everything we do in life, is to glorify God. The word glorify is a word we don’t use a lot in everyday speech, but essentially it means we reflect the love and character of God in our thoughts, words, and actions. Everything we think should reflect the love and character of God. Everything we say should be full of love and truth. Our every action should demonstrate the love and trustworthiness of God.

Nothing else matters. All of the goals and dreams we had had for ourselves died when we committed our lives to Jesus. His dreams become our dreams. His goals become the things for which we work.
