What Does Good Friday Demand of You?

April 6, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

What Does Good Friday demand of you? Do the events of two thousand years ago have any bearing on your life today? The purpose of this brief discussion is not to convince you they crucified a real historical figure named Jesus on the cross. Entire books have been written proving the historicity and authenticity of Jesus’s death and resurrection.

My assumption is if you are reading this, you already believe Christ died on your behalf to save you from the eternal consequences we all deserve. I want to focus on what Good Friday demands from the lives of all who believe. The cross of Jesus is more than a historical fact, more than just another moment in time. No, the cross of Jesus demands many things from us.

Revival

February 20, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Much is being said and written about revival these days. To be certain, our countries, churches, and families desperately need revival. But what does that mean? How does revival manifest itself in the life of a believer? The first thing we know is it won’t look like what the world tells us it looks like. I’d love to give you the Biblical definition of revival, but the fact is, the word is not in Scripture. The principles of revival are there, but God’s Word never speaks of “revival”.

We do see Jesus admonishing the Church at Ephesus to return to their first love (Revelation 2:4-5) and instructing the Church at Smyrna to hold fast to the joy they once knew in serving Him (Revelation 2:9-11). We also have the words of Peter repeating the Lord’s instruction to be holy as God is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). From a biblical perspective, then, the best definition of revival for me is to return to Christ with your whole heart, maintain the joy you once knew in following Him, and live a life worthy of His holiness.

A Christianity of Convenience

February 2, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

A reader wrote to me expressing her disgust over the fact so many “people today just want to live a Christianity of convenience.” I share her frustration. The reality is Christianity is never a convenient way to live. If it is, I guarantee you do not understand what it means to follow Jesus. The gospel of Jesus will never be popular or convenient. To follow Jesus is to live at odds with society and the surrounding culture.

In my lifetime, this has never been more obvious than in the last few years. Christians around the world are murdered every day simply because of their faith. Even in the West, Christians are now being arrested for praying silently to themselves. The culture now views followers of Christ as threats to society. I’d say that’s a less-than-convenient way for us to live.

The Weight of Our Sin

January 30, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Pastor Tom Buck recently said, “Some people talk about sin like it’s a traffic ticket violation instead of a full-blown insurrection against a holy God.” I would take it a step further and say most professing Christians treat their sin as if it were a minor infraction instead of the devastating rebellion against the holy God that it is.

Each of us sins every day in some fashion or another. It’s not the circumstances of our sins that matter or even the perceived seriousness of them. All sin is detestable to God. All sin demonstrates we don’t care how much it offends God, we only care about what we want. But the weight of our sin, any and every sin, should crush us.

Idolatry

November 17, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Few of us would say we struggle with the sin of idolatry, but almost all of us do. Idolatry takes on so many forms that it is difficult to recognize. The fact is, most of us would be unaware if not for someone else pointing out the issue in our life. The hard truth is Jesus plainly said we cannot serve two masters; He said we would love one and hate the other (Matthew 6:24).

Therefore, if we are falling prey to idolatry, we are introducing a second master into our lives. This means we love it more than we love Christ. We would never say it like that, but our lives reveal the truth.
