Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Vote Jesus

Next week is the Presidential election in the United States. The past several months we have been inundated with commercials and news reports extolling the virtues of one candidate while lambasting the other. Religious leaders have made their endorsements, as have the elite of the business, entertainment, and academic worlds. The whole world is watching to see who will be the President of the United States over the next four years. As a citizen of the United States, I feel it is my duty and privilege to vote for the political leaders I believe will best serve the needs of this country in the future. But more importantly, as a servant of the King of the Universe, I realize that whoever wins this election ultimately does not affect my purpose in life or my mission on earth.

Give Me Just Enough

greed,materialism,servitude

One of my favorite Bible passages is Proverbs 30:8-9:

Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.
Give me neither poverty nor wealth;
feed me with the food I need.
Otherwise, I might have too much
and deny You, saying, “Who is the LORD?”
or I might have nothing and steal,
profaning the name of my God.

In our materialistic Western society, we are encouraged to constantly acquire and consume. If we could sum up our modern culture in one word, I think that word would be “more”. [Read more…] about Give Me Just Enough

Cover My Eyes

human trafficking,slavery,sex trade

My wife and I were out recently with another couple who brought up the topic of human trafficking. They were asking about the problem and where it was most prevalent. As I began to answer the questions and reveal some statistics, one of them brought the conversation to a quick close. She said whenever she see’s reports about trafficking on television, she just closes her eyes and turns away because it is too disgusting and horrible to even think about. For too many, this is the default response. Even among those who profess to be Christians, it is far easier to cover our eyes than to look at some of the horrors of this world.

Think on These Things, Part 2

January 26, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

Thinking man

In my previous post (see “Think on These Things, Part 1”) we discussed the importance of what we allowed into our minds. I’d like to continue that discussion today. If you recall, we focused our attention on Philippians 4:8, which says, “Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things.”  (HCSB). So what does this look like as we apply it in our daily lives?

The Word of God

November 7, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

diverging

I heard David Platt ask an interesting question recently. The question was, “Does the Word stop with you or spread through you?” In other words, when you listen to a sermon, read the Bible, or gain spiritual insight from a song, a book or other means, what do you do with what you learn? Do you keep it to yourself and internalize the lesson? Or do you receive what you have learned in order to teach it to someone else? It’s great to grow closer to God and use what we learn to more closely model our lives after His, but until we are sharing our knowledge with others, we are falling short of the things He told us to do.
