Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Coming Back Tomorrow

May 13, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

John Wesley was once asked, “If you knew Jesus was coming back tomorrow, what would you do today?” His reply was, “I would keep to the same schedule I keep every day.” Could you answer with such confidence? Are you living today with the full expectation that Jesus could be coming back tomorrow? I suspect few of us could answer with a resounding, “Yes!” I know I could not.

Despite my continuing efforts and growth, I fear if I knew Jesus was coming tomorrow, my activities today would differ from what I did yesterday. I confess I hate that about myself. I’ve got to do better. We must all do better. How we live today should be the same as how we would live if we knew Jesus would be coming back tomorrow.

Few Are Going to Heaven

April 8, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

The greatest burden of my life is the conviction that so many, perhaps even most people who proclaim to be Christians are not. It’s not the first time I’ve written about this, and it won’t be the last. That’s what happens when a burden is constantly crushing down on you. When I look around at the modern church, and even more broadly at the industries that have sprung up around it, my soul aches for those who think they are on one path but in reality are on another.

To quote J. C. Ryle, “According to the men of the world, few are going to hell; According to the Bible, few are going to heaven.” The great tragedy of our day is not that we aren’t bringing more lost people into the body of Christ, but that so many lost people believe they are already in the body of Christ.

This is Jesus

April 4, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Why do you love Jesus? Don’t say, “Because of all He has done for me.” That’s lazy and robs us of dwelling on how awesome He is, as well as robs Him of the glory He is due. Remember, each of us has sinned and fallen short of God’s standard of perfection (Romans 3:23). If we die in our sins, our eternal destiny is Hell (Romans 6:23; Matthew 25:41).

Unable to save ourselves, we are helpless and lost. We need a savior and Jesus is that Savior. Because of our sin, we deserve to suffer the wrath of God, but Jesus chose to suffer in our place. He chose to die on the cross, enduring our shame, and spilling His blood as a sacrifice for the debt we could never pay. This is Jesus. His death gives hope to the hopeless.

False Doctrine

February 22, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

False doctrine is everywhere today, proliferating in our churches and on the internet. It’s almost impossible to escape and can be difficult to detect if we aren’t constantly marinating our minds on the Scriptures. As J. C. Ryle wrote, “False doctrine does not meet men face to face, and proclaim that it is false. It does not blow a trumpet before it, and endeavor openly to turn us away from the truth as it is in Jesus. It does not come before men in broad day, and summon them to surrender. It approaches us secretly, quietly, insidiously, plausibly, and in such a way as to disarm man’s suspicion, and throw him off his guard.” None of us are immune, so we all must remain diligent in discerning the truth.

Where You Want to Be

January 8, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Are you where you want to be or where you need to be? Most of us are where we want to be because we’re not willing to make the sacrifices or endure the discipline required to move us from where we are to where we know we should be. It amazes me even in my own life how quickly we are willing to settle for a mediocre life in Christ rather than experiencing the abundant life He promises to us (John 10:10).

Why are we so lazy? Consider everything our Lord went through on our behalf. They ridiculed, tortured, and ultimately killed Jesus in one of the most gruesome ways imaginable. That’s what He did for us. What are we willing to do for Him?
