Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Exhausted

August 1, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

We’re all busy; we all seem to be tired. Many, if I not most of us, would describe ourselves as exhausted. We’re exhausted trying to keep up with the demand’s society puts on us, and by the constant endeavor to have more – whatever “more” actually is. It’s our own fault. In most cases, the fact we are exhausted is due to the choices we’ve made and for the things we’ve allowed into our lives.  Often, we are busy simply being busy. I’ve known people who seemed to feel the more crammed their calendar was, the more important they were.

They got busy scheduling meetings even when it meant double and triple-booking themselves. It’s a bit of insanity. There is, however, a healthy way to become exhausted. When we spend our days in the relentless pursuit of Jesus, we will undoubtedly become exhausted, but it will be the sweetest sense of tired you will ever know.

Living Linearly

July 29, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

In my constant quest to simplify and strip away all which is not Christ in my life, I have been thinking recently about living linearly. It seems more than ever these days, we tend to live our lives in parallel. We never do one thing at once. We read or watch television while we eat. We do daily chores with our attention divided between the squawk of the television or the words and beats flowing through our headphones.

To increasing peril, we use our phones while we drive. Even in conversation, we spend much of it thinking of what we want to say next rather than focused on what is being said to us. Instead of focusing on one thing at a time and living linearly, we are distracted by many things and constantly processing our life in parallel.

Stealing Time

July 22, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Time is rarely stolen from us. Except perhaps in the cases of kidnapping, wrongful imprisonment, or being detained without cause, time is never stolen from anyone. Instead, I propose our time is, for the most part, either given away or sold. We all have the same number of seconds available to us each day. We choose how much of our time will be given away, and how much will be sold.

Every day we are charged to steward the time allotted to us in a way that honors God and furthers His mission and His Kingdom. If we are not vigilant, we will squander the time entrusted to us or sell it in exchange for our comfort, entertainment, and security.

Where is Your Treasure?

July 11, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke12:34). As I have written previously, a good test of where you are placing your treasure is to look at your bank and credit card statements. Where you are spending your money is where you are placing your treasure. While this is true, it recently occurred to me there is a much deeper meaning to Jesus’s words.

It’s not just the specifics of where we are spending our money which reveals where we are placing our treasure, it’s much bigger than that. We will spend our money on things of this world or for God’s Kingdom. Our treasure is being amassed in earthen containers (banks, possessions, and brokerages) or in Heavenly realms. We are either building up things we cannot keep or investing in what we cannot lose (Luke 9:24).

How Will You Live?

June 24, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I don’t want to just live my life. I want to live my life for Jesus. It’s so easy to get caught up in the flow of day to day activities and cultural expectations. But if we live our lives like everyone else, we will have missed the point and wasted the years given to us by our Creator. Life for followers of Christ should be so much more than working in our jobs and hanging out with friends and family.

If we do those things without an eye towards building God’s Kingdom, then we are no different from those without Christ. Our lives must be different. You can not encounter the God of the universe and come away unchanged. If you have surrendered your life to Jesus, you are no longer your own. You are no longer like everyone else.
