Heading for Hell

November 14, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Have you noticed the older you get, the more urgent you become about getting things done? We only get one go-around in this life; only one chance to get it right. For some, this means cramming in as much excitement and enjoyment as they can. For followers of Jesus, it means something else entirely. We have a limited number of days to point people to Jesus.

Those we don’t reach are heading for Hell. Thankfully, it is the job of the Holy Spirit to save them, but it is our responsibility to share the truth of the gospel of Jesus with them. Hell is a place not to be wished on our worst enemies, yet abandoning them to Hell is what we are doing every time we shy away from speaking the truth of Christ to them.

God’s Law

September 15, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

What does the law of God require? If we want to live according to His Word, what must we do? The answer is as simple as it is difficult. The law of God requires our complete and perfect obedience to the Lord at all times. What is easy to define is far from easy to live. In fact, we can never do it. We can obey sometimes in some ways, but every one of us will fail to always obey perfectly.

Perfect obedience means no lapses. For this reason, every one of us is guilty of breaking the law of God. If not for the redeeming blood of Jesus, we would be eternally condemned. God’s law is perfect; we are not. But in Jesus, the holy God and Creator of everything sees us as perfect.

Live to Glorify God

September 8, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

How do we live to glorify God? Preachers, Bible teachers, and authors continually tell us our lives should glorify God. But how do we do that? I think anyone who has a sincere love for Christ desires to glorify Him. We want to make Him known to the world. Still, “glorifying” Him seems elusive. It’s a strange word, and one rarely used in common conversation.

To glorify God is a high calling. The Westminster Shorter Catechism states, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” Bringing glory to God must be the primary focus of our lives. God created us to glorify Him. To do anything less with our lives is to live outside of God’s Will.

The Wrong Battles

August 15, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

In a world and country that is increasingly hostile to the ways of Christ, it’s easy to lose perspective and begin fighting the wrong battles. The battle for our culture is important, no doubt about it. At the same time, it is not the most important fight. Even if we lose the battle for the culture, God’s plan will carry on undeterred. If you’re like me, it’s hard to not be dismayed at the moral decline all around us.

Not so long ago, America was seen around the world as a Christian nation. We can debate for years what that actually meant and how well America lived up to such a platitude, but that was how the world saw the USA. Things have changed. To see it unfold in my lifetime has been both sobering and maddening.

Coasting

June 30, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Would you say the gospel of Jesus is being spread in the area where you live? Is the environment for Christianity getting better or worse? Unless you live in a small pocket of the world unknown to me, my guess is your answers to those questions will not be encouraging. People don’t want to hear the gospel of Christ, they want to revel in their “own truth”, in whatever makes them happy. The irony is people are not getting happier. They aren’t happy at all.

The suicide rate, particularly among younger people, is skyrocketing. Fear and anxiety, fueled by a relentless push by the ever-present media bombarding our every second, are rampant. Anger and rage fill the newsreels and feeds of social networks. And yet so many churches and Christians seem to be content to watch it unfold. We’re not stepping into the fray with the hope of Jesus. We’re not engaging in the battle; we’re coasting in our faith.
