The Omniscience of God

February 17, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

The omniscience of God is not something we talk a lot about. But this attribute of God is one of His most awesome. The fact He knows everything at all times is beyond our comprehension. We understand the theory of it. God knows everything. Simple enough. But to dwell on what that means is truly breathtaking.

There has never been anything God didn’t know, and there never will be something that He doesn’t already know. There is nothing God will ever learn because He already knows all things. What He knows, He never forgets. Everything that has been, will be, or is now, is all known at this moment to our majestic God. Remember that next time you feel at all impressed with yourself.

A Lying Tongue

February 14, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

A lying tongue is detestable to the Lord (Proverbs 12:22). I don’t know anyone who actually enjoys lying, but I know I don’t want to meet that person. The fact is, we all lie. No one but Jesus has gone through life completely truthful. It’s sad but true. Some lie without giving much thought to it. Some do it deliberately to gain an advantage. But followers of Jesus should feel sorrowful every time a lie escapes from our lips.

When we lie, we break God’s ninth commandment (Exodus 20:16). That alone condemns us to hell. The first time we lie, we violate God’s law. At that moment, our sin disqualifies us from eternity in His presence. We require the shed blood of Jesus to cover our sins. No matter how well we live the rest of our lives, a single lie ruins any shot we ever had at holiness.

The Practice of Sin

February 10, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

You can’t be a disciple of Jesus and willfully continue to live in sin. Sin will repulse a regenerated heart. The apostle John had much to say about this in his first epistle. He defined sin as practicing lawlessness (1 John 3:4). Another way to say this might be that we sin whenever we rebel against God’s laws. Continuing on a few verses later, John makes it clear if we are born again (born of God), we will not make a practice of sinning (1 John 3:9).

We can’t do that because God abides in us and sin is abhorrent to Him. As human beings, we will sin. We’re not perfect. But as followers of Jesus, we won’t make a habit of sinning. When we sin, we will immediately be horrified by our failure and repent of it.

Jesus Is Sufficient

February 7, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus is sufficient for all things. He is sufficient for your needs, and He is sufficient to take care of everything in the universe. His capabilities are measureless and unfathomable. Yet this same God desires to know us intimately. If this doesn’t overwhelm you, nothing ever will. Jesus is our Creator and our biggest cheerleader. He’s our staunchest defender against the enemy.

He also is holy and demands we be holy as well. The Lord is slow to anger, but when His righteous anger is aroused, we must tremble in His presence. He loves us as much as He hates sin. The blood and mercy of Jesus are sufficient to cover our sins, while the ferocity of His judgment can destroy all who would dare rebel against Him.

Only One God

February 3, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

A Biblical worldview demands we understand and believe there is only one God. Most Christians would agree with that statement, yet the way we live and the things we say often stand in contrast to this belief. We don’t correct friends and family members when they make inaccurate statements about God’s truth.

When culture rebels against the commands of our holy God, we sit idly by, convincing ourselves it is better to go along to get along. Why is it the world has no trouble proclaiming lies boldly, but Christians are so timid when it comes to speaking the truth? Why are we so afraid to declare there is only one God?
