Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

The Word of God

September 26, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Can you be a Christian and reject the Bible as God’s inspired and inerrant word? More and more people believe you can. A recent Lifeway Research survey commissioned by Ligonier Ministries finds that 53% of Americans do not believe the Bible is literally true. That’s disturbing, but not all that unexpected. What’s shocking to me is that 26% of those who identify as evangelical Christians also hold that the Bible is not literally true. If you don’t believe the Word of God, how is it you know, much less believe, the gospel?

If you reject the Bible as God’s Word, you reject Jesus being who He said He is. Those who reject Jesus as being who He says He is cannot be Evangelical Christians. Either the survey takers were presenting a flawed definition of what it means to be an Evangelical Christian, or someone terribly deceived those responding and sent them toward an eternity far more tragic than they imagine.

The Ten Commandments

September 22, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Last week, we discussed what God’s law requires of us (see “God’s Law”). But I would be remiss if we didn’t do a quick review of what God’s law actually says. God gave His law in the ten commandments recorded in the book of Exodus (Exodus 20:1-17). These are not old and irrelevant. The death and resurrection of Jesus did not nullify the law.

In fact, Jesus explained He didn’t come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). Only Christ has lived a life that perfectly followed the laws of God. By obeying, He set the example of how we all should live. Psalm 1:1-3 tells us those who meditate on the law of the Lord are happy, peaceful, and unshakeable. Don’t you want a life like that?

Revelation

September 19, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Rarely does a day go by where I don’t come across some so-called prophet proclaiming a fresh word or vision from God. It’s always something new, and never something from scripture. Brothers and sisters, we don’t need something fresh or new. We have the eternal Word of God revealed in the pages of scripture and manifested in our lives by the Holy Spirit. God’s Word is complete and sufficient. It does not need an update.

If you are looking for something fresh, you are looking for something other than Jesus. His Word is eternal. It does not change. It is not evolving. What God has said, He will do. If you want some divine revelation, then open your Bible and read. Revelation is found between the covers of God’s Word, not on some random YouTube channel.

God’s Law

September 15, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

What does the law of God require? If we want to live according to His Word, what must we do? The answer is as simple as it is difficult. The law of God requires our complete and perfect obedience to the Lord at all times. What is easy to define is far from easy to live. In fact, we can never do it. We can obey sometimes in some ways, but every one of us will fail to always obey perfectly.

Perfect obedience means no lapses. For this reason, every one of us is guilty of breaking the law of God. If not for the redeeming blood of Jesus, we would be eternally condemned. God’s law is perfect; we are not. But in Jesus, the holy God and Creator of everything sees us as perfect.

Finding Rest

September 12, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Perhaps the scarcest commodity in the world today is rest. Do you agree? If you asked the typical person how they were doing twenty years ago, they would unthinkingly reply, “Fine.” Ask anyone today, and the most common response is, “Busy.”. Research shows people are working fewer hours and taking more time off than ever, so how can everyone be so busy? I suggest it’s a matter of priorities. There are more options and demands for our time than at any other point in history.

Not wanting to miss out on anything, we cram more into our schedules. Unable to cope with the insanity in the number of choices available, we become paralyzed with indecision, leading to us falling behind in everything. Jesus promised His followers rest, so there has to be a better way, right? I believe there is. I believe finding rest is not only possible but essential to our discipleship.
