Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Fear the Right Things

September 25, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus taught we should not fear those who can kill our bodies but not harm our souls. Rather, the only one we should fear is the One who can destroy both our body and soul in Hell (Matthew 10:28). Fear is inevitable for all of us, but we must fear the right things. If we fear the wrong things, we will live our lives without joy and even in a state of paralysis.

Those who know Christ need not fear anything in this world. Everything here is temporary, so anything we would fear will be temporary as well. Recognizing all pain, discomfort, sickness, or need is temporary should alleviate much of the anxiety we tend to feel.

The Relevance of the Church

September 18, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Have we let entertainment cripple our lives and, by extension, the relevance of the Church? Speaking on this topic, A. W. Tozer said, “For centuries the Church stood solidly against every form of worldly entertainment, recognizing it for what it was—a device for wasting time, a refuge from the disturbing voice of conscience, a scheme to divert attention from moral accountability… She appears to have decided that if she cannot conquer the great god Entertainment she may as well join forces with him and make what use she can of his powers”.

When I was younger, I would have scoffed at such a statement, chalking it up to being old-fashioned, legalistic, and out of step with the times. I know I’m not alone in this because I believe it is precisely because of such attitudes we find ourselves with the Church we have today: weak, lacking in courage, and saturated with the ways and teachings of the world.

In the Blink of an Eye

January 5, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Before we begin, let me state a couple of things this article is not. It is not a commentary on the Covid mRNA shot. Intelligent people can and should look at all the research and findings to make their own decision on that. You don’t need me, the media, celebrities, or the government to tell you what to think or believe about such things. It is also not in any way to express medical opinions which I am eminently not qualified to discuss.

What I do want to talk about is the alarming number of otherwise healthy people who are dying suddenly. For our discussion, the cause of their death is irrelevant. As followers of Jesus, what should concern us is how many people, in the blink of an eye, are finding themselves in eternal Hell.

Tell Everyone

November 28, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Does the fact so many don’t know Jesus break your heart? Every morning when I pray, I bring an ever-growing list of names before the Lord. So many of my family and friends do not know Jesus as their Savior. The older I get, the more devastating this becomes. The number of people I know who don’t know Jesus convicts me that I’m not doing enough.

What is it about my life that is not compelling enough for them to want Jesus? I know it is the work of the Holy Spirit to convict a person, and I should not take this all on myself. Yet the command of our Lord to go and tell everyone about Him looms large in my conscience as I feel the weight of my responsibility.

Disciples not Converts

July 16, 2018 by Tim Sherfy

Reading the familiar passage known as “The Great Commission” (Matthew 28:18-20), it struck me I’ve been listening more to others interpret this Scripture than reading it plainly for myself. What we often hear is this is the commandment to take the Gospel to the entire world so everyone has a chance to hear about Jesus. But this isn’t what Jesus commanded us to do. He didn’t command us to simply go and tell others about Jesus. He said to go and make disciples of all nations.

Being a disciple goes far beyond merely hearing the gospel. It goes beyond believing in Jesus and even accepting Christ. Disciples are those whose lives are absolutely committed to the person and mission of Jesus Christ. We are to make disciples of all nations, not just make sure all nations have heard His name proclaimed.
