All for Jesus

November 14, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

Giving God Glory

What are you doing today? What plans are you making for your life? In our consumerist and materialistic society, it is easy to get caught up in a life that does little to reflect Jesus or promote the growth of His Kingdom. The problem is, as followers of Christ, we are called to live for a single purpose:  to glorify God by furthering the mission of Jesus. We stand in the midst of a generation of believers who profess their faith in Christ yet live lives that show little evidence of that commitment. Jesus died to not only forgive our sins, but to transform us from the inside out. I don’t know about you, but I don’t run into a lot of transformed Christians. I meet many who go to church or donate their time and money to worthy causes, but those activities are a far cry from transformation. We have one purpose and one goal; everything else is futile and worthless.

Bringing an End to Poverty

October 20, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

Homeless man sleeping on the street

I recently had the privilege of attending a screening of the documentary “58:”, a film commissioned by Compassion International with support from several other ministries. The movie detailed stories of people living in poverty and enslavement around the world. The documentary was very well done and I highly encourage you to check out the film and the accompanying website and book. The premise is that we can end extreme poverty in our lifetime if we would simply have the will. We have the resources and the technology and have in fact made great strides in the last 20 years. However, we can do better and put an end to poverty sooner rather than later.

Wanted: Followers of Jesus

October 17, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

People praying together

I have a strange dichotomy; I am a big proponent of small groups within churches, yet I have never found one where I fit in. Perhaps you struggle in the same way. Here’s my problem with the small groups in which I have been a part: they always seem to morph into glorified social cliques over time, with little to no movement towards doing the things that carry out the mission of Christ. It’s good to get together and fellowship with each other, it’s good to study the Bible, and it’s good to break out of the anonymity of the larger congregation to share our lives with a few others. But if all we are doing is a mini version of our Sunday church – without doing the work of the church – then I submit that there is little value in continuing the practice.

Pray for Water

October 3, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

A Thirsty Woman

For the next twenty-one days, Living Water International is inviting believers worldwide to pray with them for water. Over half of the hospital beds in the world are filled with patients who are there because of a lack of water or due to a waterborne disease. Water opens the door to sharing the Gospel. When you’ve provided the means to restore health to the children of a family in the name of Jesus, they are often eager to learn more about who this Jesus is. While water is something most of us in the West take for granted, it is a scarce commodity for nearly a billion people on our planet.

Asking the Tough Questions

September 15, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

A contemplative woman

Following Jesus in an authentic Biblical way brings us face to face with some of the toughest questions in life. When we choose to abandon what Christianity has come to represent and instead follow Jesus with all of our heart at any cost, we will find ourselves walking a very lonely path. It is far easier to say a simple prayer and attend church an hour each week than it is to forsake everything you have and pursue Christ with relentless passion. Being a follower of Jesus will rarely gain you popularity, wealth or respect. Jesus warned us that we will be despised by our own families, persecuted and even killed (Matthew 10:16-26; Matthew 24:9). For those of us in the West, these can seem to be extreme and foreign concepts. Meanwhile, every day in countries around the world, people are ripped from their homes, tortured and put into prisons with squalid living conditions for the rest of their lives. These people understand what it means to give everything for Jesus.
