Great Is Thy Faithfulness

July 1, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

While rehearsing the classic hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, I found myself asking, “To what is God being faithful?” As I thought through all the ways God shows Himself faithful in my life, it occurred to me that above all, God is faithful to Himself. He is faithful to His character, which does not change (Numbers 23:19). The fact He never wavers to any degree is proof of His faithfulness.

That He is faithful to Himself assures us He will always be faithful in kindness, goodness, mercy, grace, love, and even in His wrath (James 1:17). God’s faithfulness is great because it is reliable, trustworthy, righteous, and altogether holy. When we sing, “Great is thy faithfulness,” we are praising God for His unchanging character, unwavering love, and unstoppable power.

Death Is Not the End

March 28, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus lived a life so distinct from the culture that it got Him killed. By His life, we see we must cast aside the things of this world, no matter the cost. The world might imprison us. They might kill us. So what? They killed Jesus, but that wasn’t the end of the story. Jesus wasn’t just another man. He was and is the very Son of God (John 3:16).

For those who deny everything for the sake of Jesus, for those who eschew cultural demands and norms for the sake of Christ, death is not the end of us either. Jesus lived the sinless life we could never live, He was crucified to pay a debt we never could, and He rose from the grave to provide an eternal life we could never otherwise attain.

All We Need

October 17, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus is all we need. If we have Jesus, nothing else matters. Everything we work for in this life is going to go away. Nothing lasts except the eternal grace and love of Christ. The moment we try to find peace, joy, and rest anywhere other than Jesus is the moment we will become frustrated and angry.

The world can and does offer a plethora of attractive options in which we can imbibe, but only Jesus satisfies. If you have Jesus, everything you need and desire is already within you. It’s time we stopped looking outside to find contentment and begin focusing on the Savior within our hearts.

What is God?

August 11, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Do you believe in God? According to a recent Gallup poll, 81% of Americans say they do. The better question is, what is it they claim to believe? Or simply, “What is God?” In another poll, Gallup found that 29% of Americans believe the Bible is a collection of “fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man.” That means there is at least some overlap between those who say they believe in God and those who do not believe the Bible to be God’s Word.

So, who or what is this God in whom they say they believe? Before asking someone if they believe in God, we should first define who or what God is. It is a given that followers of Christ believe in God. After all, Jesus is God and God is Jesus (John 10:30; John 14:10; John 17:10-11). That is who God is.

Your Salvation is Ongoing

May 26, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

We do a great disservice to ourselves if we consider our salvation in Christ to be something that occurred in a single moment of time. There is, of course, the moment when you accepted Christ and committed your life to Him, but salvation doesn’t begin or end there. Your salvation has a past. Before you ever heard about Christ, He had already done the work necessary for your salvation on the cross.

Once you accepted the Lord’s offer of salvation, you spend the rest of your life working out that salvation in the present (see Philippians 2:12-13). Finally, our salvation is secured in the future when we meet Christ and are glorified in Him and with Him. Your salvation is ongoing, and we must never become lazy thinking we prayed a prayer and that’s all there is to it.
