The Wrath of God

February 16, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

There is no shortage of books, articles, songs, and sermons extolling the love of God. The love of God is beyond measure and worthy of all our wonder and praise. But what about the wrath of God? The wrath of God is every bit as representative of His character as love is. They are two sides of the same coin of holiness.

His holiness manifests in His love for us, while that same holiness demands His wrath against all that is not holy and standing in the way of Him expressing His love. The wrath of God is terrifying, and yet we all seem more than ready to provoke it. God’s holiness necessitates His wrath. How else could a holy God respond to the evil and filth of sin when it encroaches on His perfection?

Be Faithful

December 5, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

In a world where moral decline is progressively moving the ruling parties toward open hostility against Christians, it can cause a lot of anxiety concerning the future. That persecution is coming is no longer a question, but only a matter of timing now. How should we, as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, respond in times like these? The only thing we know for certain is things will get worse before they get better with the second coming of our King.

Until that day, I think the best thing we can do is to be faithful. One day we may be called upon to make the gut-wrenching decisions between freedom on earth or remaining loyal to Christ, between providing for our families or denying Jesus. Our steadfastness then will depend on how well-equipped we are to face those moments.

The Purpose of God’s Law

November 3, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

One thing you quickly discover when studying the Ten Commandments is no one can actually keep them. Nobody. What, then, is the purpose of God’s Law? When viewed from a human standpoint, it seems cruel that God would put a standard in place that no one could ever hope to attain. The game seems rigged to assure our doom.

Because our common ancestors, Adam and Eve, disobeyed the Lord, their sin has permeated all of creation until this day. We are born into that sin, infected by it, and hopeless to recover from its devastating consequences. It is this sin that keeps us from being able to keep God’s laws. We’re lost and in desperate need of a solution.

Worship

May 16, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

When did worship become synonymous with music? God created each of us to worship Him with our lives. It is the purpose of our being. When we gather at a church, it is true we go there to worship God corporately. But that worship is the entire service, not just the portion with musicians leading everyone in song. The very act of coming together in unity is worshipping God because we are obeying what He tells us to do.

When we listen to a sermon, we are worshipping God by meditating on His Word. Welcoming visitors to our gathering is worship because it brings glory to God. We worship God by contributing a portion of what He has entrusted to us into the offering. Every part of the service should be a form of worship to our great King.

The Practice of Sin

February 10, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

You can’t be a disciple of Jesus and willfully continue to live in sin. Sin will repulse a regenerated heart. The apostle John had much to say about this in his first epistle. He defined sin as practicing lawlessness (1 John 3:4). Another way to say this might be that we sin whenever we rebel against God’s laws. Continuing on a few verses later, John makes it clear if we are born again (born of God), we will not make a practice of sinning (1 John 3:9).

We can’t do that because God abides in us and sin is abhorrent to Him. As human beings, we will sin. We’re not perfect. But as followers of Jesus, we won’t make a habit of sinning. When we sin, we will immediately be horrified by our failure and repent of it.
