Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Why Do You Go to Church?

March 20, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Why do you go to church? I am assuming in this dark age that you still make every effort to gather with fellow believers each week. This is, after all, the Lord’s instruction given to us through the writer of Hebrews when he admonishes us to not forsake gathering together (Hebrews 10:24-25). God’s people are to meet regularly with one another to share praises, worship, and burdens.

We are the family of God (John 1:12; Galatians 3:25-26; Romans 8:16-17) and indeed the very body of Christ in this world (1 Corinthians 12:12; Romans 12:4-5; Colossians 1:24). There is great strength and encouragement to be found when we gather among others of like mind and faith. Our brothers and sisters remind us we do not fight the good fight alone.

Our Perspective

March 16, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

When Jesus is our Lord, our perspective on time, resources, career, marriage, and money changes. We want to represent Jesus well in every area of our lives. If we don’t have this desire, then Jesus is not our Lord. Contrary to some popular teaching these days, when you surrender your life to Jesus, everything changes. To make Jesus your Lord is to reject every pleasure and desire we have ever known.

Everything becomes about Jesus. All things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17), not just some things. Life as we have known it ceases to exist. This is why Jesus explains few will enter through the narrow gate (Matthew 7:13-14). Most people will insist on carrying so much stuff from their life before Jesus that they cannot squeeze through the narrow path leading to eternal life.

All We Have is Now

February 13, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve gotten (and I’m sure given) some terrible advice in my life, but perhaps none so damning as what I recently overheard someone give to another. They said, “Relax. Breathe. All we have is now.” While focusing on and maximizing each moment is something I can get behind, telling someone “all we have is now” does a horrible disservice to their eternal soul.

This brief life is not all there is. What comes next matters infinitely more than anything you or I will ever do in this life. To live as if all we have is now is to deceive ourselves and to reject God’s Word. This life is not all there is. What comes next is the reward or the consequence of how we live right now.

The Gospel

January 26, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

There is a plethora of bad teaching out there today. So many voices saying so many things about Jesus and the Bible. How do you know who to listen to and who to ignore? Trusted voices I’ve been quick to recommend in the past have proven to be unfaithful in recent years and are no longer proclaiming the simple truth of the Bible. The so-called “Prosperity Gospel” is spreading like wildfire with its focus on health, wealth, and success.

Test

Progressive ideology is misleading people by the tens of thousands. The most popular churches and most popular preachers are teaching a gospel that is no gospel at all. With all this in mind, I think it’s important to restate what the gospel, the true gospel of Jesus Christ, really is.

No Substitute

January 9, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

With all the turmoil in the world, it can be difficult to know how to respond. Do you speak out or hold your tongue? Should you join the crowd or stand with the resistance? When it comes to figuring out how you should live and which direction to go, there is no substitute for God’s Word. We do not place enough emphasis on the study of God’s Word today.

So many preachers are busy delivering self-help sermons and trying to read themselves into the Bible that we’ve lost the basic need and discipline of reading and studying the Scriptures. Bible reading is not a tired and dusty practice. It is as essential as oxygen in the life of every believer.
