Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

sin

Feel the Weight

November 9, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Perhaps nothing keeps us from experiencing the power of God in our lives more than our failure to recognize the horror of sin. We all know we should avoid sin, but too often we fail to feel the weight of that sin. Everyone sins and so it becomes easy to excuse it. We rationalize we can’t help our sinful nature, and since no one is perfect except Jesus, sinning is inevitable.

To believe such a thing both cheapens and diminishes what Christ accomplished on the cross. His death not only provides forgiveness for our sins, but His resurrection dismantled the schemes and workings of the devil. We are born in sin, but thanks to Jesus’s victory over sin and death, we don’t have to live as slaves to sin.

The Relevance of the Church

September 18, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Have we let entertainment cripple our lives and, by extension, the relevance of the Church? Speaking on this topic, A. W. Tozer said, “For centuries the Church stood solidly against every form of worldly entertainment, recognizing it for what it was—a device for wasting time, a refuge from the disturbing voice of conscience, a scheme to divert attention from moral accountability… She appears to have decided that if she cannot conquer the great god Entertainment she may as well join forces with him and make what use she can of his powers”.

When I was younger, I would have scoffed at such a statement, chalking it up to being old-fashioned, legalistic, and out of step with the times. I know I’m not alone in this because I believe it is precisely because of such attitudes we find ourselves with the Church we have today: weak, lacking in courage, and saturated with the ways and teachings of the world.

Do You Hate Sin?

August 24, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

John MacArthur has said, “The mark of a true believer is a desire to know and obey God’s Word.” I agree with that completely. I would add another hallmark of a genuine believer is that not only does the sin of the world grieve them, but that their own sin absolutely disgusts them. Do you hate sin, or is it something you begrudgingly tolerate?

Your answer says much about your relationship with Christ. We know God hates sin (Proverbs 6:16-19) and if we believe Jesus is the Lord that He is, then we must spend our days becoming as much like God as possible. He is our creator. He is our judge. If we love Him, we will hate what he hates.

Confess and Repent

July 3, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Christians have been far too passive in our acceptance of the sins in our society. In too many instances, we have not only capitulated to evil but have even joined the chorus of the culture in singing the praises of man’s ideology. Instead of coming out from among them (2 Corinthians 6:15-18), we march arm in arm to show our unity. Darkness has no fellowship with light (2 Corinthians 6:14).

It never has, and never will. So why are we so intent on pretending the two can coexist? God hates sin and will pour out His wrath on those who engage in it. If Jesus is our Lord, we will abstain from sin and keep ourselves pure before our holy God and King. We will repent and call others to do the same.

Have We Abandoned God?

June 15, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

The book of Jeremiah is sobering. It’s not one that we hear a lot of sermons from, and I haven’t met too many people who claim it to be their favorite book in the Bible. Since we know all of God’s Word is “profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16-17), it is to our detriment to neglect any part of God’s Word.

For those who think the Bible has nothing to say to our modern culture, try taking a spin through the first couple of chapters of this book. First, a small disclaimer. God directed the words of this prophet to the nation of Israel. He did not write them to the United States or any other modern country. However, God’s principles and consequences are timeless and applicable to all people at all times. We would do well to heed the warnings of God in the book of Jeremiah.
