Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Coasting

June 30, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Would you say the gospel of Jesus is being spread in the area where you live? Is the environment for Christianity getting better or worse? Unless you live in a small pocket of the world unknown to me, my guess is your answers to those questions will not be encouraging. People don’t want to hear the gospel of Christ, they want to revel in their “own truth”, in whatever makes them happy. The irony is people are not getting happier. They aren’t happy at all.

The suicide rate, particularly among younger people, is skyrocketing. Fear and anxiety, fueled by a relentless push by the ever-present media bombarding our every second, are rampant. Anger and rage fill the newsreels and feeds of social networks. And yet so many churches and Christians seem to be content to watch it unfold. We’re not stepping into the fray with the hope of Jesus. We’re not engaging in the battle; we’re coasting in our faith.

Hold Fast

June 27, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

A question I often hear pastors and writers ask is, “If you knew Jesus was coming tomorrow, how would you live today?” The best answer I ever saw or heard in response to this question was from John Wesley. He said he would live it as he has every other day, practicing the disciplines of his spiritual life. What an amazing testimony! We should all aspire to give such an answer. Tragically, few of us can answer in this way.

As the days grow darker and the return of our Savior draws nearer, it becomes urgent we prepare now to meet our Lord. While so many of us play around and dabble with Christianity, I can assure you Jesus will not be playing when He returns. If we don’t hold fast to our faith today, what makes us think we will be ready to meet Him tomorrow?

Wish I Knew Then

June 23, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

I wish I knew thirty years ago what I know now. If I knew Christ in my mid-twenties, as I do in my mid-fifties, my life would have counted for so much more. It’s easy to wish an older person would have shown me what it meant to live a life wholly devoted to Christ when I was a young man. But I also am not so naïve to think who I was as a twenty-something would have paid any attention to the wisdom of someone who had been through the wars and had the scars to prove it.

After all, the curse of our twenties is that we know it all while understanding nothing. It is only when we recognize how little we know that the Lord can come in and take control.

The Law

June 20, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Modern evangelicals often dismiss the Old Testament law as something no longer necessary. Since the death and resurrection of Christ, we are now under grace and not the law, so they set aside the law in favor of grace. But that doesn’t square with what Jesus taught. He said He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17).

Jesus was the first and last man to keep God’s laws perfectly. Thus, He fulfilled the law. The problem is, neither you, me, nor anyone else can keep the law. We need the blood, mercy, and grace of Jesus to save us from our sins against the holy God. And what is sin but a breaking of the laws of God?

The Anatomy of Compromise

June 16, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

How has the Western church fallen so far away from biblical truth? Few seemed to pay attention to the voices of those warning the church was sliding into compromise with the world over the last fifty years or more. I was having a discussion with a recent Bible college graduate and I asked him if his particular college, which has long had a reputation as a solid institute, was still standing firm on the Word or if they were suffering from the cancer of wokeness inflicting most of our colleges and seminaries these days.

His response was the professors were solid, but the student body was drifting rapidly into liberalism. My friend then commented that he felt the problem was there was truth on both sides and people were prone to swing too far in one direction or the other. I submit it is this kind of thinking that got us into the mess in which we now find ourselves.
