Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Matthew

The Law

June 20, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Modern evangelicals often dismiss the Old Testament law as something no longer necessary. Since the death and resurrection of Christ, we are now under grace and not the law, so they set aside the law in favor of grace. But that doesn’t square with what Jesus taught. He said He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17).

Jesus was the first and last man to keep God’s laws perfectly. Thus, He fulfilled the law. The problem is, neither you, me, nor anyone else can keep the law. We need the blood, mercy, and grace of Jesus to save us from our sins against the holy God. And what is sin but a breaking of the laws of God?

We Don’t Care

June 13, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

We don’t care that people are going to Hell. I know this because we’re doing little to keep them going there. We don’t care the cashier at the grocery store is going to Hell, because we didn’t tell her about Jesus. Sure, we smiled, were pleasant, and hopefully even offered an encouraging word, but that will not keep her from Hell.

We don’t care that the plumber is going to Hell. I know this because we didn’t tell him about Jesus. The reality is billions of people on this planet today are heading for Hell, and we don’t care. If we cared, we would do something about it. If we cared, we would live out the Great Commission. But we don’t care.

Complete Joy

June 9, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

When we come to Christ, a joy we have never known fills us. We want nothing but more of Him. Over time, that joy may wane. Following Jesus is not an emotional journey, it is a journey of truth. The emotions we experience from knowing Christ are exhilarating, but in the end, it is not the emotion we seek. We seek only Jesus. Still, the emotional highs propel us in His Name to do work for His Kingdom.

So, how do we continue to find joy when the struggles and trials of day-to-day living weigh us down? How do we find complete joy in a world intent on crushing us? The Bible shows us the way, and it is not about manufacturing emotion or attending events designed to elicit an emotional response from us. No, the way to reignite our joy is by sharing it with someone else (1 John 1:4).

Spiritual Maturity

May 30, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

What does it take to rob you of your joy? Are you joyful when things are going well but less so when troubles come? You can know joy every day of your life, no matter what you are going through. It is possible to live in joy in every circumstance. John MacArthur once wrote, “One of the surest measures of our spiritual maturity is what it takes to rob us of our spirit-bestowed joy”. A spiritually immature person will find their joy in a constant ebb and flow, coming over them in waves, but drifting away just as easily.

So, if we want a joy that does not leave us, we need to become more spiritually mature. This works because the more we spend time with God, the more joyful we become. And the more we learn about His unchanging character and love, the more we come to believe in His unfailing promises, the more confident we will become in our joy. We will develop such joy that nothing can shake it.

Whatever You Asked

May 12, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

What if God would give you whatever you asked from Him? What sort of things would you pray for, and therefore possess? This isn’t far-fetched, right? Didn’t Jesus promise to give us whatever we asked for (John 15:16)? It is fascinating how taking only half a verse, and out of context, can quickly morph into a presumed truth taught by so many.

It’s not just the obvious Prosperity Gospel and Word of Faith teachers who push this nonsense. I’ve heard it from supposed evangelical preachers as well. We’ll dive into the context of what Jesus said, but first, it’s worth taking a moment to answer my initial question: “If God gave you whatever you asked, what would you possess and how would your life be different?”
