Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Matthew

To Live is Christ

April 25, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

In his letter to the church in Philippi, Paul wrote that for him, “to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). A life devoted to Christ means death is irrelevant and even better than life. If we spend our lives in devotion to Christ, we fulfill our purpose by glorifying our Lord and Creator. And if we die, we get to meet Him face to face, spending eternity in His glorious presence.

This is a no-lose proposition. We serve and glorify Him in life, and we serve and glorify Him in death. There is no better deal anyone could ever offer you. Nothing else you could spend your life on offers the same consistency and reward.

Why Do You Follow Christ?

April 21, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

I read an article written by Costi Hinn in a recent “Answers” magazine. In it, he posed three questions, one after the other, that stuck with me. He wrote, “Is the gospel about the gifts or the giver? Is the gospel about earthly riches or eternal life? Is the gospel about monetary gain or the glory of God?” These are poignant questions, particularly in the Western context in which so many of us live.

We claim to love Jesus, but do we love Him because of who He is or because of what we perceive He can give us? Why do you follow Christ? Jesus is God. He is holy, and the epitome of love. His very nature demands we love and worship Him simply for who He is. And yet, many see Jesus as only a means to get what they want. This is not Biblical Christianity, and it certainly is not the gospel.

Sound Doctrine

April 7, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Sound doctrine is hard to come by these days. The largest churches and loudest voices are espousing a different gospel than the only true gospel found in the scriptures. A “new revelation” is the frequent and heretical term often used to excuse false teaching or make God’s Word more palatable for the masses. Remember, the masses will never accept Jesus.

It was the masses who rejected Him in His time on earth, and they continue to reject Him today. Jesus said, “How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). While Christ wills for all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9), the reality is that relatively few will accept His offer of salvation.

Black and White

April 4, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

God’s Word is not ambiguous. Humans add ambiguity when they don’t like what it says, so they try to twist it to mean what they want it to say. Reading the Bible should make you feel a little uncomfortable. It’s called the conviction of sin. When reading God’s Word, we instinctively know what is wrong in our life. If we keep reading, we will see God has the solution for everything wrong inside us — His Son Jesus.

But following Jesus isn’t easy in this world. It’s not because He imposes a lot of rules and requirements on us, but because we want to hold on to what the world offers. We want to fit in, to belong. The Word of God is clear on this. You will either serve God or you will serve the things of this world (Matthew 6:24). It’s black and white, with no gray around the edges.

Time is Fleeting

March 28, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

In recent days, I’ve again been struck by how fleeting time is and how incumbent upon us it is to make the most of it. I’ve written previously on this topic (see “Time Keeps on Slipping”, “Time is Running Out”, and “Time is Short”) but am compelled to do so again because when I look at my life and the lives of other believers around me, I am convinced we still don’t get it. We are here for only a little while. In consideration of eternity, our lives don’t even register as a blip on the radar.

James tells us our life is like smoke, appearing for a moment and then quickly vanishing (James 4:14) Most of us, especially when we are younger, think little of death and feel somewhat invincible. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our outlook on time matters when we are endeavoring to live as disciples of Jesus.
