Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Redeem the Time

September 17, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Getting older proves to be a diligent reminder of how little time we have on this earth. Despite youthful delusions, we are finite and will all die. For followers of Jesus, this is not a morbid thought but a cause for celebration. At the same time, it is a sobering realization that there is much work for us to do and little time in which to do it. It is also a call to action.

Test

Our time has never been our own, but we live as if it were. Every breath has been given to us by our masterful Creator, and it is our responsibility to steward it well. Time is short and growing shorter. The mission is urgent. If we do not redeem the time for God’s purposes, we risk dying with our work unfulfilled, our service wasted. This need not be the way it goes.

What to do With Your Life

September 10, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

In my years as a mentor and coach, I often talk with people who are trying to determine what they should do with their lives. We’ve all asked that questioned many times as we endeavor to follow Jesus. The problem is we try to figure out what to do for Jesus before we get to know Him with any depth. It’s backward. We must first cultivate a deep abiding relationship with Christ.

As we do that, He will give us opportunities to serve and obey Him. Then, as those opportunities chain together, a picture begins to form of how God will use our lives to further His mission on earth. We get ourselves in trouble when we try to take the lead. Only Jesus knows where this world is going, so it makes far more sense to let Him lead the way.

A Higher Standard

August 31, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Maybe it’s just me. You won’t find it explicitly in the Bible, and I will be the last to add anything to the Word of God. Still, it appears it is at least implied that disciples of Jesus should live their lives held to a higher standard. After all, our model is none other than Jesus Christ. How could we help but live dramatically different lives than those around us? It’s what He did.

a higher standard,discipleship,priorities,mission,love,Colossians 3:23-24,work unto the Lord,James 1:27,true religion,I Corinthians 13:6-7,love hopes all things,Matthew 25:31-46,sheep and goats,

We too easily surrender to the malaise of Western Christianity and forget the purpose of our lives. Our mission is to tell everyone the good news of Jesus. It’s to look after the orphans, widows, sick, impoverished, and imprisoned (James 1:27; Matthew 25:31-46). And we are to do these things with excellence (Colossians 3:23-24).

Uncertain

August 27, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Everyone seems to use the term “uncertain times” these days. It’s not as if any time has ever been certain. There are always new challenges to face and tough decisions to make. When life seems uncertain, we can take great comfort in knowing our God is never uncertain and always in control. Those aren’t just nice platitudes, but definite truths based on who He is. God is the same today as He has always been and will always be (Hebrews 13:8).

uncertain,mission,love,,faith,fear,focus,uncertain times,uncertainty,hope,Hebrews 13:8,Jesus same yesterday today tomorrow,Jesus never changes,Deuteronomy 31:6,never leave or forsake

There’s a steadiness to Jesus that brings peace to our hectic and crazy world. While we encounter situations every day where we have no idea what to do, Jesus always knows the perfect response. He has a plan for every contingency of every contingency. We serve a steady God, One who is never overwhelmed.

Be the Church

August 24, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

In a time when “going to Church” has become challenging in many places, perhaps it’s the perfect opportunity to revisit why we “go” to church anyway.  The Church Jesus established was in the hearts of His followers. Jesus didn’t instruct us to go to church; He told us to be the Church. How are we doing with that?

Looking around my Country I see levels of hate, distrust, and violence unprecedented in my lifetime. I can’t help but feel we are squandering a massive opportunity to reach a hurting world with the love of Jesus. Many of the churches in my area have gone strangely quiet. There have thankfully been a few exceptions, but mostly, it feels as if the church has gone underground.
