Which Presidential Candidate Looks Most Like Jesus?

May 5, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

While some of our readers in other Countries might be unaware, it is hard to escape the fact in America we are in an election cycle. As with every cycle, there is an emphasis on candidates trying to win the “evangelical Christian vote”. Prominent Christian leaders come out of the woodwork to endorse one candidate or another, espousing why one follows Christian principles, while another does not.

I saw a quote from a Christian musician I have held in high esteem that said, “You cannot be a Christian and vote for {candidate X}.” That made me really sad.  As someone who used to be heavily invested in political things, I understand the fervor and rhetoric. But almost thirty years removed from those days, I now have much greater clarity.

Know Your Purpose

April 21, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

With just a little searching on the web, it doesn’t take long to notice one of the most common questions Christians are asking is, “What does God want me to do with my life?” We’ve covered this topic several times before, but still the questions around this continue to pile up. As a follower of Christ, you should absolutely know your purpose in life.

Jesus came to be a refuge for those flailing in the storms of life. He came to rescue the blind ones walking in the darkness of the world. It is our charge to continue His mission. We are to go into the world and be a refuge and a light for those in darkness and despair. That is your purpose and mine. Jesus is the light of the world, and we are His ambassadors.

Living with Intention

April 18, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve written previously about intentional living. Intentional living has become somewhat of a catch phrase, which is unfortunate because there is great value in living with intention. As I’ve endeavored to live intentionally this year, I have often found it difficult to translate the concept into practical application. Recently a light bulb went on for me.

I had previously identified the areas of my life which were important to me. They are, in order, God, my health, spouse, family, friends, my writing, and finally my career. The epiphany I had about living with intention concerned these priorities. Living with intention means everything I do feeds one of these areas in one way or another.

Satan and the Resistance

April 7, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

In his book, “The War of Art”, Steven Pressfield talks about the resistance we face when we endeavor to become the person we were created to be. While Pressfield is most concerned with living out our artistic or entrepreneurial passions, I believe the same principles apply in our quest to utilize the unique combination of skills and passions God has instilled in each of us in order to complete the Kingdom work He created us to do (Ephesians 2:10).

Resistance is defined in “The War of Art” as anything keeping us from starting or achieving the work necessary to reach our goals. While Mr. Pressfield refers to “The Resistance” as an unknown, somewhat mystical – yet very real – entity, I propose this “Resistance” is actually Satan.

What’s Your Price?

April 4, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

All it took was thirty pieces of silver for Judas to betray Jesus. Adding insult to injury, some scholars claim that was the going price for a slave. According to researchers, those thirty pieces of silver would equate to about half a year’s wages.  A tidy sum to be certain, but nothing that would change your life. Hindsight being 20/20, Judas’ act of betrayal has to rank as the single most stupid and greedy act in all of history.

Half a year’s wages to sell out Jesus? If you are going to go toe to toe with God, wouldn’t you at the very least want to make sure you were set for life? The whole equation of silver to God seems ridiculous; at least until we begin to examine our own lives and see we regularly betray Jesus for far less.
