Sin Always Has a Price

December 18, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

The price of sin is hidden until after we buy in, but make no mistake, sin always has a price. Another fact I can guarantee is the price of sin is always more than we can afford. Continuously buying things with money we don’t have leads to financial ruin. You can get away with it for a little while, but you can’t escape the inevitable results. It’s the same with sin.

You might begin indulging in it with what seems to be little consequence, but the end result is just as certain. You can’t afford it. It will ruin you, and it will kill you. When you disobey God, you will face His wrath and you will face His judgment (Hebrews 9:27-28). There is no hiding and no escape, save for the blood of Jesus.

Big Prayers

November 30, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Our faith is so small. It’s as if we are children of a multi-billionaire but never ask for anything more than a pack of gum from our father. God has so much He desires to share with us, but we are too weak-minded to understand and too immature to grasp all that our position in life affords us. We are co-heirs with Jesus to all God has (Romans 8:16-17).

And yet, most of our prayers are for tiny trinkets and selfish comforts. Why don’t we pray big prayers? Are we afraid God won’t answer in the way we desire, so we shy away? I submit we don’t pray big prayers because our faith is far too small. The more we trust Christ, the bigger our prayers will become.

Feel the Weight

November 9, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Perhaps nothing keeps us from experiencing the power of God in our lives more than our failure to recognize the horror of sin. We all know we should avoid sin, but too often we fail to feel the weight of that sin. Everyone sins and so it becomes easy to excuse it. We rationalize we can’t help our sinful nature, and since no one is perfect except Jesus, sinning is inevitable.

To believe such a thing both cheapens and diminishes what Christ accomplished on the cross. His death not only provides forgiveness for our sins, but His resurrection dismantled the schemes and workings of the devil. We are born in sin, but thanks to Jesus’s victory over sin and death, we don’t have to live as slaves to sin.

Reframing

October 5, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

I heard a story of an airline pilot whose goal was to become the best pilot in the business. He framed everything in his life around that industry. When his friends were talking about Paris, he would interject about the time he flew there. When the topic was food, he would talk about the improving quality of airline food. No matter the subject, he would find a way to relate it to flying.

His worldview allowed him to see everything in the context of what he held most dear. This reframing of every situation and conversation holds a great lesson for living the Christian life. If we were all as dedicated to our faith as that pilot was to his passion, our love for Christ would grow exponentially. No one would ever question the purpose of our lives.

The Reason We Sin

October 2, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

The reason we sin is that we reject the commitment we once made to Christ. When we live our lives as if we are the center of the universe, we forget our lives are not our own. God has purchased us for an astronomical price and we are now the sole property of Jesus. The Bible declares we are slaves to Christ (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Ephesians 6:6; Galatians 1:10; 1 Peter 2:16).

Because of the modern connotation of the word “slave”, we immediately bristle at the thought of being anyone’s slave. But don’t let modern culture and human injustice allow you to deny the holy and inspired Word of God. We are slaves of Christ, bought at the price of Him dying in our place. It is a debt we can never repay.
