Confess and Repent

July 3, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Christians have been far too passive in our acceptance of the sins in our society. In too many instances, we have not only capitulated to evil but have even joined the chorus of the culture in singing the praises of man’s ideology. Instead of coming out from among them (2 Corinthians 6:15-18), we march arm in arm to show our unity. Darkness has no fellowship with light (2 Corinthians 6:14).

It never has, and never will. So why are we so intent on pretending the two can coexist? God hates sin and will pour out His wrath on those who engage in it. If Jesus is our Lord, we will abstain from sin and keep ourselves pure before our holy God and King. We will repent and call others to do the same.

Have We Abandoned God?

June 15, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

The book of Jeremiah is sobering. It’s not one that we hear a lot of sermons from, and I haven’t met too many people who claim it to be their favorite book in the Bible. Since we know all of God’s Word is “profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16-17), it is to our detriment to neglect any part of God’s Word.

For those who think the Bible has nothing to say to our modern culture, try taking a spin through the first couple of chapters of this book. First, a small disclaimer. God directed the words of this prophet to the nation of Israel. He did not write them to the United States or any other modern country. However, God’s principles and consequences are timeless and applicable to all people at all times. We would do well to heed the warnings of God in the book of Jeremiah.

Defeat Sin

June 12, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

I read a quote from John Macarthur that said, “Our ability to avoid and defeat sin comes not from imagining Christ in our circumstances but from obeying His explicit commands and following the example of His life in Scripture. Knowing what Jesus said about sin is key to overcoming it.” That’s profound.

When we are facing temptations and decisions, are we so saturated in the Word of God that we instinctively know what to do because His Word is flowing through us? Are the commands of Christ so ingrained in us we choose His ways no matter what circumstances we found ourselves in? If we are determined to live a Christ-like life, we must dedicate ourselves to the study of His Word so we are equipped to know what to do in any situation.

Types of Sin

March 30, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Most people think of sin as something they intentionally do. Those a little more mature in their faith recognize sin can also be things we intentionally do not do. Traditionally, we refer to these types of sins as sins of commission and sins of omission, respectively. There are, however, other types of sin. We can sin based on what we allow into our lives. There may be no active commission or omission in the circumstances, but simply allowing certain influences and voices into our lives can condition and predispose our hearts to sin.

The same goes for what we tolerate. If we refrain from engaging in sinful behavior or attitudes but tolerate it in others, we sin by not upholding the righteous standard of our King. Recognizing that sin comes in the forms of what we allow and what we tolerate will close almost every loophole we’ve created in our lives regarding sin.

The Wrath of God

February 16, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

There is no shortage of books, articles, songs, and sermons extolling the love of God. The love of God is beyond measure and worthy of all our wonder and praise. But what about the wrath of God? The wrath of God is every bit as representative of His character as love is. They are two sides of the same coin of holiness.

His holiness manifests in His love for us, while that same holiness demands His wrath against all that is not holy and standing in the way of Him expressing His love. The wrath of God is terrifying, and yet we all seem more than ready to provoke it. God’s holiness necessitates His wrath. How else could a holy God respond to the evil and filth of sin when it encroaches on His perfection?
