Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Love for Others

October 13, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

As followers of Christ, love for others should permeate all we do. Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love God, and the second greatest was to love others as ourselves (Mark 12:28-31). He even took it up a notch when He said the greatest demonstration of love was to lay down your life for another (John 15:12-13). Of course, Jesus would go on to model such love in His sacrificial death for our sins.

Love for others is the central tenet of Christianity. It is the linchpin and the differentiator. Self-sacrificial love begins with surrendering ourselves to Jesus and manifests as we pour out our lives in service to others to the glory of God. You cannot love God and treat others poorly or unfairly. If we love God, we will love others in kind.

Eternal Sabbath

October 6, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

At the end of His work, God rested (Genesis 2:2-3). From the beginning of time, God instituted the Sabbath. God not only commands this rhythm of rest (Exodus 20:8-11), but it foreshadows the rest He will give to those who love and honor Him once their work for Him on earth is done (Hebrews 4:1-13). The eternal Sabbath is the goal of all who proclaim Christ as Lord.

I cannot stress the importance of the Sabbath enough. God first ordained it by modeling the behavior for us, then enshrined it as the fourth commandment so it would be a practice for all generations to come. We ignore the practice of the Sabbath at the risk of disobeying God and to our peril.

Serve God and God Alone

September 29, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

The first three commandments provide almost everything you need to know to live a life pleasing to God. Last week we did a high-level flyover of all ten commandments of God’s law (see “The Ten Commandments”). Some may wonder why I’d bother spending more time on such a well-known passage of Scripture from the Old Testament. The reason is God’s law forms the bedrock of our faith.

It is this law that shows, without the blood and resurrection power of Jesus, we are lost. So I want to dive a little deeper into the first three commandments today: do not have any gods other than God, do not make anything an idol, and do not disrespect the name of God. I think we can sum up these commandments by saying we must serve God and God alone.

The Ten Commandments

September 22, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Last week, we discussed what God’s law requires of us (see “God’s Law”). But I would be remiss if we didn’t do a quick review of what God’s law actually says. God gave His law in the ten commandments recorded in the book of Exodus (Exodus 20:1-17). These are not old and irrelevant. The death and resurrection of Jesus did not nullify the law.

In fact, Jesus explained He didn’t come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). Only Christ has lived a life that perfectly followed the laws of God. By obeying, He set the example of how we all should live. Psalm 1:1-3 tells us those who meditate on the law of the Lord are happy, peaceful, and unshakeable. Don’t you want a life like that?

A Lying Tongue

February 14, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

A lying tongue is detestable to the Lord (Proverbs 12:22). I don’t know anyone who actually enjoys lying, but I know I don’t want to meet that person. The fact is, we all lie. No one but Jesus has gone through life completely truthful. It’s sad but true. Some lie without giving much thought to it. Some do it deliberately to gain an advantage. But followers of Jesus should feel sorrowful every time a lie escapes from our lips.

When we lie, we break God’s ninth commandment (Exodus 20:16). That alone condemns us to hell. The first time we lie, we violate God’s law. At that moment, our sin disqualifies us from eternity in His presence. We require the shed blood of Jesus to cover our sins. No matter how well we live the rest of our lives, a single lie ruins any shot we ever had at holiness.
