Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

The Reason We Sin

October 2, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

The reason we sin is that we reject the commitment we once made to Christ. When we live our lives as if we are the center of the universe, we forget our lives are not our own. God has purchased us for an astronomical price and we are now the sole property of Jesus. The Bible declares we are slaves to Christ (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Ephesians 6:6; Galatians 1:10; 1 Peter 2:16).

Because of the modern connotation of the word “slave”, we immediately bristle at the thought of being anyone’s slave. But don’t let modern culture and human injustice allow you to deny the holy and inspired Word of God. We are slaves of Christ, bought at the price of Him dying in our place. It is a debt we can never repay.

Fear the Right Things

September 25, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Jesus taught we should not fear those who can kill our bodies but not harm our souls. Rather, the only one we should fear is the One who can destroy both our body and soul in Hell (Matthew 10:28). Fear is inevitable for all of us, but we must fear the right things. If we fear the wrong things, we will live our lives without joy and even in a state of paralysis.

Those who know Christ need not fear anything in this world. Everything here is temporary, so anything we would fear will be temporary as well. Recognizing all pain, discomfort, sickness, or need is temporary should alleviate much of the anxiety we tend to feel.

Full of Purpose

September 14, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Steven J. Lawson said, “The greatest knowledge is to know Christ. The greatest adventure is to follow Him. The greatest privilege is to serve Him.” What a fantastic backdrop against which to live our lives! If we ingest this and use it as a guide, our lives will be full of purpose, full of meaning, and devoid of regrets. Read the first line again. Doesn’t that excite you? We have the privilege of knowing the Son of God on a personal level.

Incredibly, He invites us to follow Him and to partner with Him in His mission of declaring the gospel to the ends of the earth (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). Somehow, someway, He deems us worthy to be His disciples. He regards us worthy to be His servants, His hands and feet in this world. We’re talking about the Creator of everything and the King of the Universe. That’s astonishing!

God’s Presence

September 11, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

We are always in the presence of God. We may not always be aware of it, but He is there. God’s presence is all around us. We wouldn’t last a moment without Him. While I understand the intent behind the statement, it always irks me when people say things like, “God showed up and was with us in that moment.”

I’m sure you’ve heard similar things, and odds are better than not you’ve probably even said something similar. I know I have. But there is no “God was with us there”. He is always there, and we are always with Him. Nothing can separate us from the love of the Father (Romans 8:38-39). Nothing can snatch us out of His presence (John 10:28).

Self-Confidence

September 7, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

For those around my age and older, I think we’ve always equated being American to being self-confident. Perhaps it is arrogance, and it is undoubtedly sinful pride, but the fact remains. I’ve heard it expressed by those I know from other countries and if you watch people at all, I think you’ll agree with me. This may be true on a superficial level and I admit it is an over-generalization, but on the flip side, there can be no doubt that in the confines of their minds, many desperately struggle with their self-confidence.

Search Amazon for books on self-confidence, and you’ll find over 20,000 selections to choose from. Plug the term “self-confidence” into a search engine and it will return over 50 million results. Regardless of how we feel about ourselves, it seems clear we are a nation obsessed with being self-confident.
