Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

What Does Good Friday Demand of You?

April 6, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

What Does Good Friday demand of you? Do the events of two thousand years ago have any bearing on your life today? The purpose of this brief discussion is not to convince you they crucified a real historical figure named Jesus on the cross. Entire books have been written proving the historicity and authenticity of Jesus’s death and resurrection.

My assumption is if you are reading this, you already believe Christ died on your behalf to save you from the eternal consequences we all deserve. I want to focus on what Good Friday demands from the lives of all who believe. The cross of Jesus is more than a historical fact, more than just another moment in time. No, the cross of Jesus demands many things from us.

Why Do You Go to Church?

March 20, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

Why do you go to church? I am assuming in this dark age that you still make every effort to gather with fellow believers each week. This is, after all, the Lord’s instruction given to us through the writer of Hebrews when he admonishes us to not forsake gathering together (Hebrews 10:24-25). God’s people are to meet regularly with one another to share praises, worship, and burdens.

We are the family of God (John 1:12; Galatians 3:25-26; Romans 8:16-17) and indeed the very body of Christ in this world (1 Corinthians 12:12; Romans 12:4-5; Colossians 1:24). There is great strength and encouragement to be found when we gather among others of like mind and faith. Our brothers and sisters remind us we do not fight the good fight alone.

Our Perspective

March 16, 2023 by Tim Sherfy

When Jesus is our Lord, our perspective on time, resources, career, marriage, and money changes. We want to represent Jesus well in every area of our lives. If we don’t have this desire, then Jesus is not our Lord. Contrary to some popular teaching these days, when you surrender your life to Jesus, everything changes. To make Jesus your Lord is to reject every pleasure and desire we have ever known.

Everything becomes about Jesus. All things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17), not just some things. Life as we have known it ceases to exist. This is why Jesus explains few will enter through the narrow gate (Matthew 7:13-14). Most people will insist on carrying so much stuff from their life before Jesus that they cannot squeeze through the narrow path leading to eternal life.

Born to Die

December 22, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

The birth of Christ is indeed worthy of celebration. It marks the moment God stepped into history to make a way for the salvation of humanity. We rejoice and sing majestic carols to the King of Kings, and marvel at the miracle of His birth and the subsequent sinless life He led. But perhaps because of all the pageantry in our celebrations, we overlook that while the birth of Christ was glorious, the fact is Jesus was born to die.

His life on earth would last a scant thirty-three years. Three decades after marveling at His birth, His mother would mourn His death. Jesus came so we might live, but the only way to give us that life would cost Him His own.

Sin Has Consequences

December 1, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

While it seems obvious to say, sin has consequences. Everything we do against the holiness of God will subject us to punishment. Despite what many think, or what casual observation appears to reveal, no one can thumb their nose at God and get away with it. Our God is holy and sin cannot exist in His presence. It is only His patient love and goodness that prevents Him from incinerating this world right now.

There have been periods of great evil in the history of our world, and we are certainly living through a devastatingly wicked period right now. God is patient, but He will not remain so forever. Someday, perhaps very soon, the righteous anger of our holy God will be unleashed and destruction awaits all those who refuse to bow to Him as Lord.
