Anxiety

May 5, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

It seems anxiety is inescapable in our modern culture. Even the most stoic cannot avoid the onslaught of fear, despair, and uncertainty being directed at us from every direction. I struggle to comprehend how anyone can survive these times without having faith in Christ. I would expect those who reject Christ to struggle to deal with their anxiety. They have no anchor. They have no hope.

But for those of us who have accepted and choose to follow Jesus as Lord, He has not left us defenseless against this vicious attack on our mental stability. We not only have the power within us to defeat anxiety, but we also have the great hope of eternal peace and deliverance. God’s Word provides us with all we need to know, and His Holy Spirit gives us the power to put that knowledge into action.

Sound Doctrine

April 7, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Sound doctrine is hard to come by these days. The largest churches and loudest voices are espousing a different gospel than the only true gospel found in the scriptures. A “new revelation” is the frequent and heretical term often used to excuse false teaching or make God’s Word more palatable for the masses. Remember, the masses will never accept Jesus.

It was the masses who rejected Him in His time on earth, and they continue to reject Him today. Jesus said, “How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). While Christ wills for all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9), the reality is that relatively few will accept His offer of salvation.

I Follow Jesus

February 24, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

I follow Jesus because I’d be lost without Him. When I look around at this world and see the evil pervading it, I know I need someone to guide me through. As I encounter difficulties in life, I’ve often asked, “How do people without Christ get through the tough times? Where do they find their comfort, peace, and strength? The answer is typically in temporary medications like alcohol, drugs, sex, entertainment, or other vices.

The problem is the letdown on the other side is even worse because the problems don’t go away. Numbing the pain is not the same thing as having someone carry it for you. Jesus is my rock, and my refuge, my shelter from the storm (Psalm 18:1-2). He’s my deliverer, comforter, and Savior (Psalm 23:1-4; 2 Corinthians 1:3; Isaiah 12:2). I am nothing without Him.

A Meditation on Psalm 121

February 21, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

What do you do when worry overtakes you? Where do you turn? The author of Psalm 121 knew the answer. He lifted His eyes towards Heaven and knew His help came from the Lord (Psalm 121:1-2). We must never forget this truth when the troubles of life threaten to overwhelm us. The very One who made all of Heaven and the earth is an ever-present help in our times of need and distress (Psalm 46:1-3).

God never leaves or abandons us (Deuteronomy 31:6). If God is for us, no person or circumstance can stand against us (Romans 8:31-32). Jesus defeated death itself on our behalf (2 Timothy 1:10; John 11:25; Hebrews 2:14-15; Revelation 1:17-18). There is no longer a reason to fear anything. It’s difficult to feel overwhelmed when you are fearless!

The Omniscience of God

February 17, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

The omniscience of God is not something we talk a lot about. But this attribute of God is one of His most awesome. The fact He knows everything at all times is beyond our comprehension. We understand the theory of it. God knows everything. Simple enough. But to dwell on what that means is truly breathtaking.

There has never been anything God didn’t know, and there never will be something that He doesn’t already know. There is nothing God will ever learn because He already knows all things. What He knows, He never forgets. Everything that has been, will be, or is now, is all known at this moment to our majestic God. Remember that next time you feel at all impressed with yourself.
